Evil Bar stool your probebly like me, ive only been following football for about 11 year (im 17)and when i say following i mean actually going to the games your going on about geordies and mackems as though its being part of north east football history, not true because it wasnt too long ago when you never heard the word mackem mentioned. It is the case that Sunderland supporters living in Newcastle are becoming more likely to call them selfs mackem than geordie but your obviously not old enough to understand what it was like before the geordies made up an insult towards people from Sunderland, that insult obviously being mackem.
So what im saying is mackem is very new and too say no self respecting Sunderland fan would call himself geordie is absolute tripe.:toocool:

You underestimate the history of geordies and mackems which actually goes back hundreds of years. In the 1600s Newcastle was attacked by the Scottish Army, who sided with Cromwell against King Charles. Sunderland allowed the Scots the use of their region as a supply base, leaving Newcastle open to attack from both flanks and the Toon was subsequently overran. Ever since there has existed a bitter rivalry between Newcastle and the traitors who sold us out, Sunderland. The term mackem actually dates back to the early shipbuilding industry, the people of Wearside Mack'em (make them) and other Tack'em (take them). It began as an insult.
The mackems have recently tried to embrace this word, pretending to be proud of being 'mackems'. People elsewhere used to call anyone from the north-east (even Durham!), a geordie, but with greater awareness through TV, and Sunderland gaining city status etc, the rest of the country has began to make the distinction, and the mackems moved in line with that trend. Now they disassosciate themselves with the term 'geordie'. The only mackem who would call himself a geordie is either 30 years out of touch, a twat, or both :) |

Are you saying that people from down south knew fcuk all about the north east and are only starting to take notice? well i agree because most people down south think the north of england stops at leeds :whip:
The term mackem was a geordie insult too the people of sunderland, people of sunderland turned it into a compliment and now everyone around the country call people from sunderland mackems, i bet 90% of them dont even no that it was an insult to start with.
I agree with pretty much you say but instead of 30 years try 10 years and as for twat, well make your own mind up. :) |

At the end of the day, it was all Sunderland's fault for sympathizing with those ginger-haired transvestites from over the border leaving Newcastle for dead!
Not that it matters anyway, because the Scots were pushed back another 50 miles, Newcastle was once again English and Sunderland evolved into a dump. |

The only news I ever recieve from Sunderland is someone being stabbed to death or an unexploded WW2 bomb being discovered. See - even the Germans had it in for the mackems! :D
Why do you think the river Wear runs through Sunderland? Because if it walked it would get mugged!
At least Newcastle has some nice areas. |
