Carl Cox - for always being consistency good
Oakenfold - for pioneering the big stadium shows
j00f - For the passion he brings to every set
Tiesto - for bringing Trance to the masses (playing Olympics/In Concert/etc.)
Guetta - for bridging the crossover between dance/mainstream
AvB - for still having a radio show and starting it when all we really had was the Essential Mix and staying (relatively) loyal to Trance |
Great points, amen, +1 |

| It could have been BT but these last 4 years he has been a real stinker. 90s and 2000s though, he was on fire. For the sake of being different and not choosing Sasha, Im going to throw out Tom Middleton. Solid productions the past 2 decades under multiple aliases |

Armin is a sleeper pick when it comes to G.O.A.T. status. He was one of the biggest rising stars (no pun intended) during trance's boom period. There were radio shows before ASOT, but ASOT pretty much spearheaded the concept of other household DJ's having their own shows as well. Popularity wise, he has the most #1 DJ awards. |

Hmm... tough one but I think overall I'd have to choose Daft Punk - they were hugely instrumental in things like:
-bringing House out of its slump in the mid 90's
-starting the whole trend of huge spectacles with Alive 2007
-lots of pop crossover
-managing to stay relevant with both mainstream and serious electronic music listeners since their birth |

I didn't mean to take a jab at pioneers from the 70's with this thread. They certainly deserve to be in the conversation. |

Being that music is pretty damned subjective, there isn't one singular answer to this question.
For my tastes and preferences I say John Digweed. His music has remained cutting-edge for as long as I can remember, all the while changing his sound. |

| Paul Oakenfold was huge in the balearic downtempo scene, goa scene, and introduced trance to America. Has anyone impacted various scenes in EDM like he did? He's seriously a GOAT candidate. |

is it really an answerable question?
is there anyone that is so well-rounded to bypass subjectiveness and display undeniable objective quality on all fronts? i.e. consistency - over the years - on singles, remixes, artist albums, dj sets etc? are there any other important factors? running an influence label, perhaps.
sasha is ghost-produced. as most (all?) of the big names seem to be.
pvd is out purely on the basis of what he is doing now... i think his early stuff is ghost-produced as well?
carl cox hasn't made many prominent records really. legendary figure on the dj circuit.
digweed, i'm not sure how involved he is in the production process. is nick muir the workhorse?
oakie. influential dj early in his career. now way past it.
sven vath. not a great mixer technically, but can put together a great set together nonetheless. veteran and a great performer.
none of them excel in all areas, so i can't see the answer not being affected by own personal bias, or you'd have to ask what is the single most important factor (dj sets, i'd argue) and of course, none of these dj's careers are over yet... could sasha or digweed do something to over their legacy? |
