I think this might be my first post in MD, lulz.
I was just listening to one of my favorite Gui Boratto mixes, noting that it is one of the most tightly programmed mixes I've enjoyed recently.
But then I thought, to be fair - most of the productions are his, so yeah I guess that makes it easy to put together a solid mix.
So I ask you - does it count/is it still fair to give high marks to a DJ if he programs a mix with mostly his own tunes? Do you think it's "cheating"? Does it matter?
If this topic has already been discussed, feel free to berate me for this thread. |

Welcome to Tranceaddict. :)
I don't think it's cheating, but I could definitely see it being much easier for him to mix, given that he should be more familiar with his own productions and style.
Nevertheless, if he manually mixed them together, it's still a skill. Most djs are likely quite familiar with the tracks they play, anyway, so it's not an entirely different scenario. |

not cheating but the way i look at it it's kind of shameless promotion.
you should be trying to articulate your style through track selection, rather than just showcasing an album which you can do at some stupid launch party or something.
real bonus points is if you do something special to blend the tracks together like a live PA or enhance them in some way. that to me separates the boys from the men. |

If you claim to be a DJ and just play your own songs, then you're just a jockey or better yet a jukebox. If it's on live equipment then that's totally differnt.
Daft Punk Alive 2007 is a great example of what to do with with a bunch of your own tunes. |

| I thought Gui Boratto doesn't 'DJ', much in the same way as Robert Babicz doesn't 'DJ'. |

very few DJs/producers can do a entire set of their own material...and not bore the crowd
Prydz is one of those very few |

True, but that doesn't invalidate my question. Does it? |
