| Looking to upgrade my phone (LG optimus V) to Galaxy S3 for $170. I like the smaller form factor of the iphone just can't stomach the price and the crack screen syndrome. I like to drop my phone now and then. Not really sure if the Galaxy screen is more durable. |

Pretty much all smart phones use either gorilla glass or sapphire (in the new iphone). They all crack just the same. They always talk about how great the glass is, but it's really only scratch resistant. Anything hard enough to resist scratches will be prone to shatters, which is more of a problem than scratches imo. Just get a good case and then it doesn't matter.
I've had a 5s for over a year now and it's in perfect condition despite a few drops, but i also have a case that sticks out farther than the screen of the phone, so even if you drop it face down nothing touches the screen. |

| None. I am the only IT guy I know with a cell phone, smart or dumb. God I hope it stays that way, too. |

I have 2 phones
Samsung Galaxy S5, which I have had for 9 months now and its proving very resilient, I have dropped it a couple of times when getting out the car and it survived without even a scratch
I have also just got a Nokia Lumia 735 for work, had it a week and yep, already dropped it, but again it bounced back without a scratch |

I am a total phone geek, had a mobile since 1994 and a smart phone since 2001.
I actually right now have an S3 (TMOBUS - SH999).
The good:
The phone itself has been great - it's fast, the 4G bandwidth I get in LA is incredible, not so good in less built up areas but at least overall coverage is good.
It's snappy out of the box, really no need for custom roms, so no cooking required, but when you stack the thing with various apps it does get a little bit laggy but that's more a flaw of android than the phone itself.
The s3 is very light and small form factor, and when you balance that against the size of the screen it's really quite incredible. I used to laugh at iphone users (well I still do) until the 6+ came out as the S3 (which isn't even the 2nd latest model form Sammy) has a bigger, better screen in a device that is smaller and lighter.
The screen is beautiful; the res is amazing and the colors are bright.
The audio goes loud on it as does the built in speaker.
The Bad:
DO NOT GET THIS PHONE WITHOUT TWO THINGS
1, insurance
2, A robust cover
I have gone through 4 of these as without a cover they break if you just look at them the wrong way.
It's slightly annoying as when you put the cover on it it makes the incredibly thin profile of it about double the width. Thankfully, even a really cheap gummy style cover is enough and I picked one up what was obviously at some dodgy money laundering store masquerading as a phone accessory shop for $6 and it's served me well.
The problem is the screen goes nearly to the very edge of the device meaning even a small fall will crack it.
I was nealling, on grass with the phone in my pocket (before I got a cover) and it dropped all of 11 inches on to the grass and that was enough to crack the screen.
Once you have a cover, you're good but without, it's not a matter of if it will break, but when.
The only other bad thing is that battery life is horrendous. I mean, I'm lucky of I get 12 hours when using it intensively. In fairness, i'll have wifi, GPS on while downloading a torrnt in the background, while streaming music to the car via bluetooth, while it's also doing live navigation in the car (yes, it can do all that at once - suck it, apple slaves).
What makes it worse is when you're a power user, the batteries will degrade in about a year. They will hold full charge, but they longer and longer to charge, and non samsung chargers (like a cheap car charger) will just keep the phone on, but not charge. I was driving down to the inglehood late night and the phone battery was at 0, plugged in. I had to drive deeper in to the ghetto for about an hour and the phone did not charge at all. I knew if I switched the engine off, phone was bye bye and I have no idea how to get out of there and this skinny white boy was going to end up as fresh meat.
Overall, the phone is amazing, probably the best device I've owned maybe with exception to the HTC HD2 at the time which if you speak to anyone that owned one or any of my fellow geeks on XDA forums, will tell you it's one of the best electronic devices ever conceived (shame they didn;t just make the same phone again with more memory and 4g capability).
I'd say for $170, jump on it, you won't be disappointed. Feel free to ask me anything you need to know about it. |

| Sony Xperia ZL, 5" full hd screen, small bezel, 4G LTE, 2GB mem, 13mp camera, fast enough for my needs. I bought it (hardly) used over Ebay in Germany as it's not sold in Holland. |

BlackBerry Curve. 8930 I believe? :o
Does what I need it to do - texts, calls - and that's all that matters to me. Plus I love the ing keyboard.
I have been thinking about 'upgrading' this month, though. Maybe the Galaxy S3. I don't need a brand spanking new model of a phone.
I value experiences more than possessions and would rather use any 'free' money I have for travel. Maybe one day I'll catch up to all the cool kids when my student loans are paid off. Probably not, though, cause I don't give a .
Oh, I finally did ditch my old TV and bought a new flat screen HDTV on Black Friday :toocool: |
