The truth is he was disappointing when I saw him, but I still enjoyed this set. I probably don't know about techno.

But I don't see how any of this makes one track "bland" and the other not. Both tracks are basically just a bassline, a plonky synth vamp and a couple of perc loops. The production aesthetic is different but in terms of the actual music going on, I don't hear much difference.

I think it makes a huge difference. For example most people here will listen to 90s uplifting trance rather than 2000s Anjuna stuff and they are musically pretty much the same thing as well. A lot of people will cite sidechained basslines and plucked VST synths as to why they can't stand listenimg to 2000s trance, even though it's the same formula as 90s uplifting and that's exactly what these drumcode basslines and fx tsunamis do to me.

And in terms of your second post, can you really apply any of that to this Dave Clarke set? Yes he might play some "big room techno" but he plays a hell of a lot of other as well and takes it up and back down, speeds it up and reels it back in. You really can't accuse that set of just being the same track from start to finish.

This set definitely isn't the worst i've heard, I was just saying that this style definitely attracts that sort of DJing en masse. I was still bored for most of the set but then again, i'm biased against most of what he plays there.

Yes, they're both actually just as banal as each other for the most part, but I suppose when you're heavily invested in a genre these little differences matter a lot more.
Woony
I suppose that's true but I also honestly don't think you have to be very invested in a genre to care about production style. It's not like we are talking about small details here, the difference between a 90s and a modern production for example will be immediately obvious to anyone in most cases regardless of the genre.

I appreciate that and I understand why you don't like the kind of track we're talking about. I was trying to get a handle on what exactly you mean when you rail against "big room" techno, because you seem to lump tracks together that musically sound quite different to me. I mean, Clarke is playing tracks by guys like Perc, Kirk Degiorgio and David Meiser in this Boiler Room set, and I couldn't really see what connected them to the stuff I've seen you decry as "big room" techno in the past.

Not a Dave Clarke fan at all

LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix Edit)....., I just realized I have it at a compilation I bought in 1990. That's pretty long ago..

Yeah, a little too much in that set. Good there is a camera, for me that makes it a little less annoying while listening.

I was being a bit hyperbolic, I know not everything he played was in that vain but when I hear enough of that stuff I just get frustrated and write the whole set off I guess.

Yea some of the tracks are good but some not so much.
