I'd say the above artists did not necessarily start out as cheese. I remember when Sandstorm and Better Off Alone were actually considered good songs by many. They became cheese due to overexposure - they got played on mainstream radio next to N'Sync and became MTV friendly.

My opinion of cheese - songs that blatently rip off a trend, like using Darude style synths or almost copying the melody of Art of Trance's Madagascar to a tee.

Also, vocal tunes tend to come across as cheese more often than instrumental. Especially if they incorporate the verse-chorus-verse formula, it feels more like a pop song than trance. I've said it before and I'll say it again - 95% of the time, DJ's are not poets. Some of the lyrics of these songs are just BAD!!! There's nothing worse than a song you're totally digging, and suddenly these cringe-inducing vocals show up - some chick with a baby-doll voice singing about love, or trying to imitate the vocals of some 80's song (DJ Sammy anyone). uuhh. That's cheese for ya, and not Grade A Cheddar either, more like Cheese Whiz.

I agree cheese is the mass produced stuff, sandstorm was not a bad tune at all when it came out. But it is still in the track list at some clubs it's truly sad and pathetic. By mass produced stuff i mean like some one else sited PPK - Ressurection was awsome but the tracks following should just be labled Ressurection B coming soon Ressurection C and then.... Darude uses that same synth style alot in his tunes as well. When artists think that making a new song consists of changing 1 chord and throwing in a new sampler it is cheese. Vocals can be really nice if done right and in a few songs i feel they elevated the song as they broke up what would be a simple loop repeating to much. Mainstream trance does not really bug me in the least because i dont listen to the radio. I have no idea what mainstream is anymore i dont know what is on mtv i search for songs and lurk on vinyl websites with audio samples. but ne way cheese is effortless reproductions of there first and only major hit.. at least that is IMO

cheese is whatever you think it is, if you think its ian van dahl, so be it, if you think its airwave, so be it

I disagree

commercial = a track made just to make money, not for the love of music

cheesy = intentionally corny music made by silly people / often uses whimsical or nonsensical melodies... (can also be commercial at the same time, but not necessarily) Go on MP3.com, I'm sure theres a ton of really cheesy music made by unsigned artists.

I would describe anything by Aqua / DBA/ Daze / Toybox or any other happy house groups to be pure cheese... IMO

Good or bad, sandstorm, was, is, and always will be sandstorm, pretending it's better or worse after a few years is silly. That lead synth in it is crap, was then, is now...

Cheese is a way to classify mediocre tunes in a way to make the people calling them cheese feel more intelegent. As soon as a half decent song gets airplay it's cheese, as soon as a good song gets mainstream play, people who loved it will call it cheese.

I think airplay plays a part but is not a defining factor. Chicane's Saltwater got waves of airplay when it first came out, was featured on MTV and went up the Billboards.. when you listen to it today, your spine still tingles. I dont think that would the correct way to define cheese. Having said that, cheese means different things to different people.. some may say Saltwater is cheese.

Cheese is whatever you feel gives nothing to the trance community or any genre of electric music for that matter... I love the supposidly cheesy 80's remixes... they appeal to the people who are listening that arent hardcore tranceaddicts like us... But I also love the deep songs that make you tingle inside and are full of emotion... It is the job of the artist to try and appeal to as many people as possible thats how they make their livings...
