How to find a "good" book to read?

To chart this we have NYT bestsellers on one end and the classics on the other. Then we have the reader's mood, education, gender, etc

I've seen software based solutions that makes suggestions based on previous reads. This doesn't work for me because I want something entirely different from my last read.

Books are like shoes, even a well made shoe might not fit you.

Book reviews? Friends' recommendations? Even big chain stores here like Waterstones have little "recommended" blurbs on the shelves for certain titles, much like music shops do.

Try Goodreads. I used to have an account. It's basically an online community where you can catalog books you've read and books you'd like to read. You can find and add friends/share your lists with people. A great way to discover new stuff!

Where is our TA Book Club thread?? I'm halfway through Margaret Atwood's 'Maddaddam', the final book of her Maddaddamn triolgy.

I always ask for gift cards for Christmas because I just can't keep up with all the stuff I want to read...so I go crazy after the holidays. I love buying hardcovers!

Next up I have:

I don't trust reviews. What book don't you like? Let's say Frankenstein now look up the reviews on Amazon. Not to speak of the popular drivel the masses rave over.

I'll have to give good reads a try.

JERRY: Yes, you haven't read a page, have you?

GEORGE: No.

JERRY: Big surprise.

GEORGE: I couldn't. You know, if it's not about sports, I find it very hard to concentrate.

JERRY: You're not very bright, are you?

GEORGE: No, I'm not. I would like to be, but I'm not. What am I gonna do? The book club meets in a few days.

JERRY: Why don't you rent the movie?

It's relatively easy to find good books considering the industry I work in.

In addition to trusting my colleague's recommendations, which are 9/10 spot on, I usually stumble upon a mention of a book that sparks my interest in an online publication and take it from there.

Otherwise, I'm checking off these two lists:

http://www.modernlibrary.com/top-10...est-nonfiction/

http://www.modernlibrary.com/top-100/100-best-novels/

I've been reading some stuff on here lately:

For example, this is a great essay:

If you're in the right circles and doing the right browsing - on or offline - I don't see how it's hard to find good books.

Lol. Yea, I don't care about the order - just the listings.

I especially dig the cover for some reason.

Speaking of, what makes a book stand out to you? Color schemes? Artwork?
