OK, so I'm the one who left a glass of water on the nightstand near where my Macbook was sitting, but he's the one that knocked it over.
UGH!!!
Luckily, I backed up all of my writing and pictures last week, but I can't say the same for my music.
Anyways, if drying it out doesn't work, I'm curious about what kind of computers (specifically laptops) you guys are using. Although I've used an Apple for the past five years, I'm not against going back to Windows. In fact, the new Macbooks don't impress me one bit. There's a sale on the Air right now, but I don't know whether to pull the trigger.
I've thought about a Chromebook, too, but I think I need more function than it offers. Does anyone have one?
Help a brother pick a new computer! :) |

| Using an ASUS TP500L, been quite pleased with it. Didn't think I'd have any use for the touch screen ability, but I've found it rather difficult to go back to non-touchscreen computers after this, as it makes things incredibly easier. |

From my brief research, I'll probably be choosing between a Lenovo or an ASUS if I stray from Apple.
I need something light yet powerful. Nothing bulky.
That ASUS TP500L looks really cool. I've never considered a touch-screen laptop. |

| If you want to stay with mac I think a used 2010 15" with the dual graphics is a safe bet, and snow leopard if possible. Maybe the 2011 models but if i remember correctly theres some pretty widespread issues with the gpu. They're attaching everything to the motherboard now on the new ones so that |

No secret Mac keyboards suck.
I unplugged my mac desktop keyboard, sprayed it with windex, gently wiped it with paper towels and let it dry for a few hours. Never worked properly again had to toss it in the trash. |

| The only advice I'd give is to physically use the model you like the look of before buying. So many manufacturers seem to go out of their way to devise horrendously unergonomic keyboards and touch pads. Type away on the keyboard and get a feel for the mouse pad before buying, or you'll spend the next five years swearing every time you hit two keys at once. |

The new macbooks are fine if you just want a really light shiny thing for doing simple design, art, writing, blogging, web etc. I went through all this in the thread in the production forum but the short story is that unless they are going to bring out an even more minuscule MB air, then the new macbook is essentially the replacement and they'll eventually discontinue the air.
It's a terrible time to buy the air as I reckon in two years it won't exist as a new product - you're only going to get the first round of discount now, and I expect that discount to go deeper.
There's strong evidence to suggest that there will be a completely redesigned MacBook Pro coming towards the end of the year which will be pretty interesting as it should use the new skylake processors and DDR4, and if so, that thing is going to be potent (although probably extremely expensive).
I used to be an ASUS fan (having owned 3 over the last 10 years) but this last one has not held up well to my abuse. New harddrive (went SDD when the HDD started to crap out after 18m), new screen, new keyboard and it's go at least 4 major chuncks of plastic missing from the housing.
I will say the keyboard is actually nice to use but the trackpad had issues from the outset. The video output is also (you get jerky video motion, useless for anything other than slow moving documentaries or dramas). and one of the USB ports also shorts out the entire thing. And I get random BSOD and no amount of troubleshooting has ever been abelt o resolve it, and according to forums I didn't get a duff one, it's just how this series (k53/k54) behave.
I might still give asus another try, but I'd be damn sure to review the video output and track pad first before dropping coin.
HP are and full of bloatware, Dell are fuckers (you can't even replace drives in some of the machines) and they're actually not good value pound for pound, IBM are dated in terms of features. Lenovo are decent but they never seem to have the component spec combo I need.
Suppose it will be time to visit the blueshirted cnts at best buy soon. |
