Your favorite "character" compressors?

I rediscovered NI's Supercharger compressor a few weeks ago. They gave away it for free last year and, wow, I guess I really overlooked its potential. So, I paid the $25 upgrade for the GT version and have been using it everywhere. I'm pretty amazed at how flexible it is. It's anything but transparent, though - it's designed for character/color or just outright brutal demolition, and it really sounds great. Anybody else using it? What compressors, limiters, etc. (software or hardware) are you using specifically for character?

pretty much same only with the UAD version - to be honest its not something i do that often, i tend to go for saturation or outright distortion

SDRR is current fav - it can do compression also

Actually one I rediscovered after not having used it for years:

Psp Vintage warmer. you have to use it really subtly as it gets "fake" when you overdo it but some of the sound you can get out of it are actually really quite nice.

If you're talking hardware, then it's got to be the 1176LN or the LA2A. I know they're obvious choices and it may just be habit/comfort, but you really have to go out of your way to up with either of those. It's like they will you to use them right.

softubes tubetech and FET. The EMI compressors from AB plugins which i think has been discontinued but that sounded . Waves API 2500. NI's dbx 160. Haven't tried the waves one.

really? I've never used NI's one but used the real DBX 160 for years and although it did one thing really well (drums perc) it was basically a down and dirty cheap comp that you could drive hard.

I've heard nothing but good things about NI's version. Haven't tried it myself, though.

Big +1 on VW. That still gets lots of use here, especially for finalizing mixes. Also, a +1 to CLA-76, although I tend to use the CLA-2A a lot more, especially for vocals. Wish I had a real 2A, or even something like Warm Audio's emulation.

yup, smash the drum buss and it has a wet / dry control.

UAD needs to stop making that is exactly the same not realizing that the original developpers would of added features if it was digital.

Any plugin company that doesn't have a dry wet feature should really just stop making plugins.

I used to abuse that thing at 1 time but yeah be subtle with it though it can easily do more harm than good.

Of course the tube tech cl1b.

And I'm closely following the bx_opto from brainworx just released via Plugin Alliance. Couldn't demo it cause something is ed up with the e-mail verification and stuff. Will check it on a later stage. Meanwhile if someone can demo it would like to hear their opinion.

Softube FET is ridiculous. there's 4 different ALL modes, little hidden saturation goodies everywhere. I still cant wrap my head around why the low and hi cut sound so good in parallel, but they do. Rack extensions changed the game for Reason, there's about 4 other "character" compressors that different crews swear by as well.
