Jack Moss - Aftershock [Progressive]

So another progressive mix, this one partly inspired by Jon Cockle's excellent Machine Elves set. I was having a quiet Friday night in and started playing around with some tracks I've had lying around for ages but never used in a proper mix. The results sounded pretty good so I dug up some more tracks the next day and turned it into a proper set.

If there's any concept to this mix, it's basically to try and do modern progressive in a peak-time manner. I see a lot of prog mixes online and everyone does the same damn thing - they either use prog as early-set material before building up to (usually proggy psy) trance, or failing that they just play a "deep" prog set. In other words, progressive is inevitably treated by reformed tranceheads as slow, mellow music. I wanted to do a prog set that doesn't really build up, it just comes out of the traps with a string of big basslines and keeps things PLUR-tastic from there.

See what you think, anyway.

Man, I'm seriously getting behind in my music lately. Downloading now, hopefully I'll get to it soon.

Wicked! Saw this on my Soundcloud stream and had to come and have a poke about...

Michael & Levan, MSZ, Mistique, Hybrid, Tilth being well represented and mashed together by you is always going to be an awesome recipe. :eyes:

Like an absolute prat I uploaded one of the drafts to Soundcloud instead of the final version. It's replaced now but if you downloaded the mix prior to today your version contains a couple of rather embarrassing mixing errors early on. So please do my ego a favour and cast your defective versions into the digital ether, and re-download it.

:haha:

Good thing I didn't get around to listening yet. Just grabbing the new one now.

Gonna give this a try.

No dice. I already downloaded it and I'm a very busy man

Fortunately for you, I didn't even notice the phrasing of transition into Air at the time, it's not problematic at all (but I know it's always painful when you notice a school-boy error in your ow mix)

I thought the music included here is absolutely stellar, and it does an excellent job of building a journey without an obvious warm-up to peak time narrative. Relaunch - Air is exactly the kind of banging atmospheric prog that I love, with it's throbbing bassline and clever maintenance of energy during the breakdown.

Listening to Juan Sando - Disruption loud in the car was slightly problematic as there is a noise in there that sounds a bit like an indicator, which made me go ridiculously OCD on the motorway. Still a good track though.

Was delighted to hear one of my favourites, Ain True Love in someone else's mix, that's such a classic track for me. But the vocal track you followed it up with was just as great, and is going in my beatport cart immediately.

I liked the way you then brought it down a bit with lank in order to change direction and move into Breakbeat with two absolute weapons from Hybrid, and I also loved the way you brought the enegy back down again from there with Prometheus. I've got this track but I've never really thought much of it until now. I always thought the massively epic breakdown lead nowhere, but I'm guessing this bookmark of a set peak this is exactly how it's intended to work

The last 3 tracks were top drawer as well. I thought it was a bit strange that you used a Timewave trance track given your intentions for this mix to avoid doing the usual of building up to trance, but I guess that record isn't quite as 'balls out the bath' as some of his other efforts on JOOF Recordings.

Also, you are right, this is way better than Unnatural High ;)

It was you bloody rushing me to get it online so you could listen to it in the car that lead to the up originally!

I couldn't actually find that Antony Grant track on Beatport when I went to look up what label it was on for the tracklist. I bought it back in 2010 and it seems to have been territory restricted from the UK at some point in the interim. I'm sure an arrangement can be made for it to end up in your possession, though.

The Timewave track is definitely trancey trance and it's probably the most thumping moment of the set. But I don't think this is a "building blocks" set where that track is the final piece of the puzzle. I didn't even plan on playing it originally, because it's such a bastard to mix out from.

Cheers for the detailed review anyway, and I'm glad it passed the Jon Cockle exam.

a little over half way through this one. really good stuff. it's all pretty new to me as i don't really dig anymore. nice one.

Will add this to the list...props on using Antony Grant. I really like the track 'Way Out'. The Original and Red Shadow mixes are fine pieces of dark chunky prog trance.

Mr Game+Watch
This was pretty neat, I was especially partial to "Ain't True Love", the Relaunch tracks, and Formula of Fear... very groovy, with some nice basslines and of course some spacious melody.
