Hey guys, I made my first video tutorial and in it I write an EDM lead in real time. Hope someone finds it useful!

cool thanks for the vid

18mins of messing around, off key for a bassline and 4 chords :p
Though I applaude making videos, you might want to think of some kind of a script first.
Or if it's really about live noodling and it's not your finest moment, don't share the video :)
Bit of feedback
1. Bassline ok
2. Chords, would actually start with the first inversions following the bassline
3. You realize that just moving the 3rds is creating 2nd inversions of OTHER chords, that's where it starts to sounds off key and then start transposing that off key chord, fruity trying to stay in key keeps it sound odd :D as the root note of the first inversion still isn't in the key ladder of the bassline anymore :D
Again good effort, but next time prepare with a script, work out the chords IN KEY
And roll from there. You now lost 15mins fooling around trying to get back in key :D

Are you saying the end result ended up out of key?
Raphie
Couldn't stand it through the end, skipped forward
Just saying you lost 15 mins finding the right chords

My intention was to show the process. I don't know music theory, I do it by ear. It'd be useful to learn the chord progression formula, i guess, to save 5 minutes, but the truth is I've never needed to. I come up with them so quick and i doubt i've ever been out of key in the end. 20 minutes to come up with essentially the entire foundation of a song melodically isn't thaaat long.
Also I found another chord progression earlier in the video as u pointed out. However, as I go on to explain, it doesn't fit the genre. It'd be good for trance, but not carefree and optimistic enough for EDM. Again by showing the process I show why not all progressions that sound good are right in each context.
Pulling up a pre-made chord progression doesn't teach anything. That's like giving the answer to a problem to someone who is learning math without showing them the work.

With respect, what you're doing doesn't show anything either. You're futzing with notes until it just about sounds ok. That's how everybody that has had no musical training does it.
If I were you I'd focus less on the chord progression and more on the layering in future vids.
When you have musical training (and I mean learning an instrument rather than theory) you'll come up with chord progression in your head in literally seconds.

Fair enough.

Great fun and a lot of bedroom producers will find this accessible and give them inspiration they can do it.
One thing I might suggest is making the music louder.
Any kid within 2 seconds would know if an edm track is right or not and I bet me and most producers / musicians could not do it (convincingly)

You know to be fair, Joel (the Mau5) started out like this and some of his early big tracks were made like this; he openly admitted that he doesn't know music theory and just noodled/moved notes about until it sounded ok.
I can;t check the vid as it's not there anymore, but I actually don't mind when there isnt a script for tuts, just as long as something can be gleaned from it. there's also some incredibly bad scripted vids out there where all the life has been drained out of the process because the person is so scared of making a mistake on camera / they've prepped it so hard there's nothing spontanous.
That's fine for engineering tutorials where it's all technical, but creative vids have to have some element of spontaneity.
You can actually see this in the Jaytech Point blank vids; one is really great as it's just home speaking and making stuff on the fly while explaining it, and the other is really prepped and no where near as insightful or useful.

Hey thanks for your perspective on my method! The video should still be there? I clicked it just now without being signed in and it worked for me.
Were you programming at an early age? Nah. I was playing MS Golf and Minesweeper. And getting blown away by the amazing effects that Corel Draw could provide. At the same time, my parents were sending me to piano classes. I went to a school for eight years in Niagara Falls, where I got a lot of classical music pounded into my head. in the mix Making the 'mouse' Do you still find yourself using that knowledge in your music today? The practical part, sure. Not so much the performance bit. Back then, it was no problem to get up on stage and do something, but I think I fried my brain at some point because I can't play anymore. It's so ing weird. It's like, when was the last time you were on a bike? It doesn't matter—you can get on it and pop a wheelie or whatever. With things like that, though—that require intricate motor skills—you just forget. When you were growing up, did you listen to classical music? Absolutely ing not. I hated it. I was that little bad-ass kid at the piano school that never listened to it. What music were you listening to? Skinny Puppy, Steely Dan, Tears for Fears, that sort of stuff.
