DJ-compilations are already doing badly enough, why would anyone care about one without a DJ's name attached in 2016? It's like on these "Club Traxx Vol. 36" compilations from the 90s, but 20 years too late.

More detailed summary from GU:
quote:
Now celebrating its 20th year, legendary mix series Global Underground is preparing a brand-new mix album series called Global Underground:Select.
For the last three months, the now revitalised GU team have been scouring the globe for the very finest club tracks to compile and mix for this new series, which theyve since spliced, edited, re-edited and polished into two slick continuous mixes.
The mixes feature tracks from the full gamut of house and techno from heavyweights including Jonas Rathsman, Roman Flόgel, Bicep, Dusky and Maceo Plex.
The new series will be released on January 29 on a specially designed & packaged CD format and digital download.

I'm...not sure what this is supposed to be, if not just another mix compilation featuring some of the latest 'alternative' dancefloor material. Aside from the anniversary theme, am I missing something that's supposed to make this special?
rubez
looks like a filthy cash in... are they getting desperate?
some random computer mix, not even a concept behind it, artwork, bundle options to further fleece you of your cash.

sad .
i loved the nubreed offshoot. the anthony pappa mix was deliciously dark.
Woony
I really doubt they're making big bucks with this in this day and age, just kind of seems desperate to me.

I actually don't think there's anything desperate about this; Andy Horsfield (the label's founder) is back at the helm as of last year following a very extended departure, and has been working ever since to revitalize the GU brand to something at least resembling its illustrious past. His strategy seems built largely on the original GU model, which emphasizes slick, high production value physical copies, so it remains to be seen whether any of this will take or if he's just horribly out of touch with how the scene and music business have changed.
I don't think the label has ever been desperate, just lazy, and stuck spinning its wheels following their post 2002 decline. They tried to shake things up a bit in that 2007-09 period when Balance and Fabric had completely taken GU's share in the compilation market by adding more flavorful names like Layo & Bushwaka!, Adam Freeland, and Felix Da Housecat, but no one seemed to really give a , and then they just all but fell off the map after 2010 following yet another Dave Seaman compilation. They added a couple more editions to their Electric Calm series and really gave their Afterhours series a shot in the arm during this time, but GU seemed to have just lost too much steam by then to make headlines anymore.
rubez
have you actually looked at this crap?
if it's not desperate, it's plain greedy.
maybe they need the money, but it's a substandard gimmick product by all accounts.

That's the thing, what exactly is the gimmick here? This seems no different from the GU: Mixed compilations that have been sporadically coming out since around nine years ago.
rubez
no different?
they haven't recruited a dj to compile or mix it for a start.
seriously, who's work is this? have they rounded up whatever they can get licenced and got a studio engineer to mix it? how is that any different to the no-name MOS compilations?
the only reason fans are expected to buy it is the GU brand.
they are whoring out bundles on their site, trying to offload the crappest of their back catalogue.
doesn't seem desperate, or milking the GU name?

GU: Mixed have all been anonymously compiled, as have all the Electric Calm and Afterhours mixes (or up until when The Forth stopped doing them at least).
In fact the only thing that distinguishes this from GU: Mixed is how it's not available as a four disc unmixed edition. The only mixes they put a face behind have been on the City Series (and NuBreed, I guess), but these GU generals have always just been about the tracklisting.
rubez
may as well be single tracks if they aren't mixed by a dj and are all about the tracklisting.
the side series is a cheap cash in. no dj to pay, no expensive tracks to licence. they probably take the dregs of whatever is available to them, a few good tracks, and slap it together.
they need to commission a decent GU. wtf was that james lavelle wankfest? how is that not an artist album? everything about that was terrible. and weird.

Of course they're straight up whoring the Global Underground branding. Most of their fans are in their 30s and 40s and have an income and a good many of them are married and are looking for something nostalgic to listen to, i.e. the soundtrack of their early 20s when they were out clubbing rolling balls to progressive house and trance. This demographic also isn't considered to be electronic music aficionados; rather they are casual fans who used to be big into the scene a very long time ago. So they'll buy this pile and think it's good. Or at least that's what GU hopes they'll do.
