Global Underground:Select (pg. 2)

Agreed. The only way I can see this being profitable is by targeting 30-40ish clubbers who still have lingering loyalty to the GU brand and probably aren't in-touch enough to spot an obvious/weak tracklist.

Of course they're straight up whoring the Global Underground branding. Most of their fans are in their 30s and 40s and have an income and a good many of them are married and are looking for something nostalgic to listen to, i.e. the soundtrack of their early 20s when they were out clubbing rolling balls to progressive house and trance. This demographic also isn't considered to be electronic music aficionados; rather they are casual fans who used to be big into the scene a very long time ago. So they'll buy this pile and think it's good. Or at least that's what GU hopes they'll do.

Jackpot , i agree completely.

Interesting that you say that, as MoS bought GU some years ago but then sold it back not too long ago....

I really just think this has way more to do with rebuilding their brand to a point of relevance in the club scene than it does with cashing out on former fans who simply don't know any better. There's no denying that GU is going to ride as hard as it can on the reputation behind their name (at least with people who didn't stick around to realize how dreadfully stale their flagship series had become in the past 10 years), but a tracklisting with names like Maceo Plex, Hot Since 82, Dusky etc. all suggest that they're trying to gain credibility with RA dominated 'new underground' rather than get over on a loyal but out of touch generation of older listeners.

Man. This thing ing sucked.

I can feel it - the 'cheap boring techy house with 5 stars on RA' feeling.

RA has pushed a good amount of garbage over the years (mnml, PC music) but never stuff like this.

Speaking of which, lately I've seen some RA editors talking about how they are hoping for a mnml comeback. :nervous:

I'd say mnml has already made a comeback, the romanian and romanian-influenced stuff is really quite popular now. I don't like all of it but there's some fantastic stuff coming out of that scene and it's all definitely better than that 2006 crap. It's not getting a lot of coverage on RA though for whatever reason.
