| What was Ben UFO playing, Jenny? He's playing here next week and I confess he's a musical blind spot for me. All I know is his reputation for being a proper selectah with deep crates. I've seen Four Tet a couple of times and found him painfully boring. |

Wow, what WASN'T he playing would be a better question. I definitely preferred his solo time over Four Tet's, but the two of them together truly are something out of this world. The perfect combination of experimental weirdness with dancefloor sensibility.
There was no opener or closer, just the two of them all night long playing mostly vinyl for about 8 hours, and I was there for almost all of it - that was the earliest I've arrived to a club in a long time.
So yeah, in 8 hours the two of them covered a lot of ground. Ben was playing dub reggae when I walked in, then Four Tet took over with some crazy weird deep ambient sounding with bird sounds and forest noises - it was oddly groovy.
Lots of mind melting techno, jacking house grooves, weird deep synthy , garage, and some R+B samples sprinkled throughout. Ben is really so great, he plays just enough upfront cuts to keep the familiar stuff interesting. I don't know how else to describe the music of the entire night but a headtrip that the body understands too.
Just a couple of dorks, working their magic. |

Lol, last year in Detroit we were waiting for Ben to come on while JETS were playing. They are so ing awful and I hate Jimmy Edgar, and they were playing over their time slot while we could see Ben waiting patiently to set up his gear and whatnot... so I made my way to the front and started yelling at them to get the off and let Ben play, lol.
I'd like to think it worked. I know they heard me at least. I made sure we made eye contact. ers. Lol. |

| Stu I have good news and bad. First the bad. The birding was rather boring with a bunch of old people with funny hats, note pads, and binoculars. I'm glad I did it and the expert leading the group was impressive. He could attract particular song birds using an iPhone app and wireless speaker. He also could discern the multitude of species from their call. No pictures. Now for the good...nothing coming to mind I'll have to get back to you. :p |

I was never brave enough to try any hallucinogens (too uptight by nature, which probably just begs for a bad trip), but I had a couple of buddies that swore by shroomz back in the day. They said they never laughed so hard in their lives. Felt like their ribs were broken for the next few days. |
I've never heard of anyone having a bad trip on shrooms; they're great!
Although I went solo and had a bit of a cold, the experience was amazing.
If anyone ever plans to visit any ruins in Mexico, these are the ones to go to.
I was happy to see some monkeys, too. Super cool to see them up close and personal in their natural habitat. |

| i went to electric island on monday to catch papa sven. got there and dj tennis was playing, second time seeing him. didn't really enjoy it. then jamie jones came on. was playing some pretty crappy stuff and that even sounded like euro at times. i made an effort to get faced. there was a point where i had 4 beers on me at once. i finished the night with 10 strongbow purchases and a pack of cigarettes (i don't even smoke). spent over a hundred there. i still left early, to catch the end of basketball game. i even took a 10$ water taxi. at least it was sunny. i think i have to cancel my detroit trip too for a family matter |

Electric Island is crap. Jamie Jones is e. I point and laugh at you.
I'm embarrassed to say I almost missed Bonobo one year in Detroit in favour of Jamie Jones. Almost. Phew. |

| wasn't all bad, highlights were seeing some one stretchered off by paramedics and watching a fight break out right in front of me. i only have to be there once more this year for klock and dettmann. the main problem now is i won't be able to go out for like a month |

| Yeah I just can't do it anymore. I mean it isn't terrible, but for the price and reasons I go, it isn't worth it for me. I'd rather take a few trips to Montreal every summer for Piknic instead. Better DJs, better sound, better crowd. |
