A reconstruction of my set from Futurity's 5th birthday party in Brixton back in June. Ben Alonzi was scheduled to play a classic trance set but had to drop out at the last minute so I stepped in and basically just played some of my favourite records of all time to a crowd that seemed to love them as much as I do :D.
1: Flowjob - Daily Dragons (Anton Chernikov Psy Prog Remix) [JOOF Recordings]
2: A.B.E. - Motive (Grayarea Ulterior Dub) [Fade Records]
3: Antidote - Synchronicity [Bonzai]
4: X-Cabs - Engage [Hook]
5: John 00 Fleming - The 10th Life [JOOF Recordings]
6: The Voices of Kwahn A.D. - Ya Yae Ya Yo Yo Yo (The Light Mix) [Excession]
7: Weird Continental Types - Phat As [Bedrock Breaks]
8: Cass vs. Slide - Perception [Automatic]
9: Brisker & Magitman - Complex [Flow]
10: Bad Tango - Interphase [Broken Robot]
11: Nic Parisi - S.A.X.X. (Airwave Remix) [Danza]
12: Chakra - Opacity (Chakra & Audio Junkies Remix) [HOM-Mega Productions]
13: Phasebase - Twisted Dream (Burufunk Remix) [O Recordings]
14: Paul Van Dyk - Forbidden Fruit (BT & PvDs Food of Love Mix) [MFS]
15: Dejure - Sanctuary (Starecase Mix) [Nebula]
16: John 00 Fleming - Tour De Trance [JOOF Recordings]
17: Jan Gustafsson - Hallucination [Galactive]
18: Planisphere - Deep Blue Dream [Bonzai]
19: Christian West - Eterna (Club Mix) [Fluid Recordings]
20: Antidote - What Time Is Love (Inspired Mix) [Bonzai]
21: Greg Gow - Transform [Restructured Recodings]
22: The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar [Virgin] |

Chakra - Opacity (Chakra & Audio Junkies Remix)
Love this track! Really solid mix all round. Are there regular nights like this in Brixton? |

| I might have to give this a spin, Dave. I do love you in classics mode. |

Looks nice.
I actually prefer the original Opacity over this remix. |

The original is too mellow to fit in at that point in the set, though, so I see why he went with the remix instead.
I missed some variation here, despite this obviously being a two hour set being played to a peak hungry crowd, which limits how far off the deep end you can go without clearing the floor out. At the same time, it's very impressive how you've managed to make 10 year+ old tracks sound bang up to date by placing them between progressive trance tracks of this era. It really is what I wish more people would have the guts to do in say, techno, without pitching everything down to -7 because it's "too fast" otherwise.
Otherwise, there isn't much for me to complain about here. The tunes are pacey with a solid punch, and the momentum never really drops out when the breakdowns actually do come in. That mix from Greg Gow into Star Guitar is sweet as well, even though I don't really like the latter all that much. Well done.
Finally, why the hell is noone putting on nights with this stuff outside of Brixton?! Do I really have to go to London to have some big, catchy melodies with my night out that doesn't involve standing around and waiting every three minutes? That's not fair. |

Futurity is a regular day party, and 'Dance:Love:Hub' is a regular night time party that both run in the Brixton 414, bu the same promoter. They are both really good nights! Make sure you come to the next on 9th September

Do you still live in Whiteley? If you choose to live in that no horse town, you can't complain about the lack of anything!
Will listen to this tonight Dave - looks class |

Never lived there, just worked there. If I was actually living in the UK right now, I obviously wouldn't have much to complain about. I just think it's a shame that nobody wants to stick with this approach to trance outside of England, since it's so enjoyable when it is done right. |

Just to confuse you Dave, I'm going to totally contradict Jan and say that this set had a touch too much variation for me, at least in terms of flow. I've heard a few of your live sets recently where you've chopped liberally between trance and breaks, and I have to express reservations about what it does for the flow.
The first six tracks were stellar, capped off by a knee-trembling transition between J00F and Voices of Kwahn, but the whole mid-section of the mix felt somewhat disjointed and overly busy to my ears. Luckily the closing section of the mix from Planisphere onwards won me back over. The transition into Star Guitar was indeed delightful and it was a great track to finish on.
Although there is much to be said for your slap-bang sets with constant switch-ups and hand-brake turns, it's a style best suited to your crunchy breaks side with more of a party mood. I feel very much that prog/trance is designed for big sweeping sets and transitions where long outros crash inexorably into enormous builds like tectonic plates colliding.
You've put together that kind of "traditional" trance set with spectacular results several times in the past, so you obviously know what you're doing. I sometimes get the feeling you're trying different ways to bring the old-school trance ethos into the 21st Century, in an era where the new tracks are simply too thin on the ground to build a full set with. You did a run of mixes where boom-y big-room techno provided the stepping stones to the glowstick section, and now there's this psy-breaks infusion. Perhaps the kind of set construction you display here has proven profitable on the DLH dancefloor. Either way, if it rocked the room on the night then that's more important than my quibbling. |

That's interesting, as I had no problem with the rhythmic variations in the set structure at all, as anti-"trance" as that may be. My issue is rather that there was room to show off a wider spectrum of sounds and approaches to progressive trance (the tracks after Voices of Kwahn up to the Airwave remix do mitigate this somewhat). |

Programming is a matter of taste, of course. Some people absolutely love Move D, but I always get the impression no thought connects any three records he plays in a row.
(Dave's nowhere near that scatter-brained, naturally.) |

Thanks for listening guys.
Jack, I'd be interested to know which other mixes you're talking about? I have had nagging voice in my head telling me something similar, but have been ignoring it mostly because of the overwhelmingly positive reactions from people. |
