If you read this year's Edelman Trust Barometer, you'll see most Americans distrust the media (slide #12). So, the more the media criticises the president, and the more the Trump "anti-government" government says journalists are peddling "alternative facts", the stronger Trump looks.
It would be unwise to "let it go" - it strengthens Trump and weakens the media. Why would he miss the opportunity to score some points?
I'm not sure he thinks that far ahead and is that smart. Maybe the people around him are, but I'm not so sure he is. The guy goes after anyone & everyone whom says anything negative about him and does it on an open forum. I wish he'd get the off Twitter..

Me neither, and that's why I believe it works so well. He's not putting on an act. He's just the right thin-skinned narcissistic person at the right time.

The thing is, there are some very smart people who believe this is all carefully engineered by trump; that it's straight form the fascists handbook etc.
Basically, divide people in to camps with outrageous populist slogans that resonate with certain demographics, whilst constantly undermining the press and their validity.
The "alternative facts" thing plays in perfectly to this. There's no such thing as alternative facts, but again it plays very strongly to people who want to believe things irrespective of reality or evidence and it further underlines a narrative of the organized press being evil to push some liberal agenda while the "straight shootin' non-politician tells it like it is".
I really don't know if I believe it's that structured simply becuase it would be such a deft performance of appearing to be so thin-skinned, while actually being a macro-calculated strategy to serve a singular purpose. I just don't think the guy has it in him, as someone that smart, wouldn't have to play it like that. In other words, if you have that level of cunningly prescient evil in you, I doubt you'd be that much of an idiot on the outside or have gone bankrupt or play it so wide all the time. It's a sort of self defeating paradox.
President Donald Trump will begin rolling out executive actions on immigration Wednesday, beginning with steps to tighten border security — including his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border — and other domestic immigration enforcement measures, according to two administration officials.
Later in the week, the president is expected to restrict the flow of refugees to the United States. The proposed plans include at least a four-month halt on all refugee admissions, as well as temporary ban on people coming from some Muslim majority countries, according to a representative of a public policy organization that monitors refugee issues.
The person was briefed on the details of that proposed action by a government official and outlined the expected steps for The Associated Press. The officials and the public policy organization's representative insisted on anonymity in order to outline the plans ahead of Trump's official announcements.
The president is expected to sign the first actions Wednesday during a trip to the Department of Homeland Security, with additional actions being rolled out over the next few days, according to one official.
It appeared as though the refugee restrictions were still to be finalized. The person briefed on the proposals said they included a ban on entry to the U.S. for at least 30 days from countries including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, though the person cautioned the details could still change.
I wonder how long his "getting it done" phase will last? I must say I don't mind the immigration restrictions. As being in S. FL I'm used to seeing tons of illegals having it easy and still getting benefits of the tax payers while not contributing back. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot that do contribute but there's a huge population that are just useless and refuse to integrate as a Murikan.
Seeing how Europe has fared with letting in all the Muslims is not something I'd be happy to see here. With that said I still don't like Trump :tongue2
