What's in a song...

OK, i know i'm gonna be stretchin' a bit here but I hope you guys know what I'm trying to get at.

You know with certain artists, they have a unique or distinctive quality within all or most of their tunes.

For example, M.I.K.E productions have that helicopter kinda feel (there's probably a technical term but I'm not gonna even try) or Dumonde has that thumping hollow bass or just simply PPK's annoying Roland keyboard effects.

What I wanna know is which special characteristic of an artist do you enjoy the most? I mean when you hear the song you go "that's gotta be a something something tune and I love it."

Personally, I love the Gouryella basslines and are probably the easiest to identify when being mixed in. Get the pic?

You can get as technical as you want, I just wanna know if we only listen to a song or do we actually absorb it. I'm actually quite serious, so don't be putting ATB unless you mean it - Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D

P.S. Hey Ves, what special quality do you like in a man... uhh, I mean song. ;)

All push productions have a similar sounding bassline, and the synths, are dirty and techy soundings. Usually, sometimes he uses softer less dirty synths, that are still techy. At least thats how id describe Push productions.

for big bouncy percussive hats and cymbals -> oliver klein and filterheadz
for basslines -> marco v
and for synths -> three drives

I really enjoy the 'breathy' synths that Armin uses in most of his productions. They give his tracks a sense of space that's unique.

synths/melodies = Nu NRG/AVB/PVD/Second Sun
Basslines = James Holden/PVD/H&J

I find these similar aspects in Tiesto's productions, has a feel of spacey trance soundscapes which make me feel alot of emotion and space. :)

The synths in Ayla or Yahel tracks do it for me every time!! :eek:

Well i'd say James Holden's productions are the easiest to spot, with its really really sub-bass b-lines n beats. I also find Makoto (from drum n bass) productions really distinctive, have a really jumpy jazzy feel good sound, along with distinctive snares/claps/rhythms.

SOLAR STONE! it's so easy to identify one of there remixes/tunes! i don't know what it is about them but ya just know its them!
Bedrock
you always seem to know when ur hearing a Hybrid tune, its always cleanly produced and has a complicated, detailed sound

This is a good topic MichaelDudikoff. Certainly made me think :)

I agree with discitelli. Solar Stone have a unique chilled sound that make their productions & remixes easy to identify. They have a very relaxing and dreamy feel to them. And I can almost always identify a Solar Stone track with its ability to make me think of love, affection and all that saccharine stuff (especially Solarcoaster!). :p

PvD's productions usually have this overall feel to them that I really like, especially in his older tunes such as Forbidden Fruit, The Greatness of Britain, Words and Another Way. I don't really know how to explain it, but his tracks have this, hmm, clarity and crispness to them. It might be the basslines that give this effect, as they're quite defined... oh I don't know ! I like them and that's all that matters I suppose!

Yea Hybrids another one... the quality of production + hybrid breaks stand out alot. Layo & Bushwacka breaks are pretty distinctive..lotsa ed up sounds, yet it all fits together so well. Hard to describe, but sometimes i feel that if i copied one of their beat patterns into hammerhead (beatbox program :)) it would sound e. Somehow they always make the most awkward of combinations sound sick. DJ Shadow is another one.. sampled, cruisey n just an all-round shadow touch :)
