My parents say people used to put chains in (car) tyres to avoid slippery roads, but this was outlawed because it would damage the asphalt or something... I don't see how something similar could be a problem with bicycles though.

Tires with spikes is a solution, but more in theory as they are not very practical for just a couple of days.

Snowchains for cars are obligated in e.g. Austria and Switzerland when the roads are covered with snow. Snowchains on normal roads indeed damage the road and are very uncomfortable and noisy.

Normal chains also get used, but more with mud like this. Often used when pulling trees out muddy forests, plenty of that in Brazil I think:

I've got studs on my tires and I love them. They've already saved my life last year. When you're living up here and driving a small car, I think it should be a no brainer.

In any case I'm not sure what Jack can do with a bicycle. Not sure it warrants a fat bike because those widetires are meant for packed snow.

Lira could you take me under your wing so to speak. I’d like to profit from your powers of divination. Let me know if the Eagles will win the Super Bowl and whether they will cover the spread.

Thawing out in ye olde Southeast today, thankfully. Going to be a "long" weekend, mentally, as we are waiting for the wife to have a biopsy and MRI next week (hopefully) to confirm...lymphoma. Never been so scared/nervous/paralyzed in my life. :(

Edit: biopsy is a week from today. Hurry up and wait!

Thinking about you guys this week. Hopefully you're getting on with things without letting this consume you too much. :)

Eagles score first, Patriots finish ahead, Gronk proposes to Brady, Gisele shanks Gro-- oh, wait, Gronkowski was ruled out, right?

Just the two first bits then.

Studded tires are mandatory here from December to February (or was it March?). The downside to that is that on winters like this when there have been only a handful of cold days and no snow, the roads get absolutely wrecked by the studs.

I get by with all season tires. I should get snow tires but don’t want the extra expense and hassle. Studs are over the top I don’t want the expense, noise, and bad gas miles for that one day out of the year there might be ice. Besides I live in an affluent neighborhood we only get white ice.

I would think that would be end of February. Studded tires are not allowed here, but also aren't needed as we get little snow. Even winter tires are not mandatory. In Germany they are in winter conditions, so there you need to buy a set or have proper all seasons (with Alpine-symbol as M+S symbol isn't enough any more).

My car as M+S tires, my wife's now has real all seasons with the Alpine-symbol. As both are 4wd that should do. All seasons are very popular in the US nowadays I read.

My car has a set of tires that are intended for propulsion in most circumstances; though I doubt the efficacy of my tires in certain harsher weather conditions. I am also uncertain which tires are allowed in my region as this is not something that has come up before in my line of work. I'll perform further research and respond back once I've retrieved the appropriate data for inclusion in the tranceaddict annals.

Thank you, JP. We are just going through the motions of a normal day to pass the time until Friday. We should know something 24-48 hours later, but with the biopsy being later in the day on a Friday...a long weekend of "hurry up and wait," is in the forecast.

Ugh worst. You guys should treat yourselves to a nice dinner out, or some kind of spa treatment - couples massage or something. Do something fun and frivolous and selfish!

Imo, the worst part of waiting for potentially news is not the news itself, but not being able to take action/form a plan of "what next."

I hope you keep us updated, whatever happens.

We'd love to, but right now the younger step-daughter is on 30 day house arrest for her "joy riding" incident back in November...and she has to be "arm's length" with one or both of us until the first week of February. All this stuff seems to hit at once, unfortunately. Still, it's mostly first-world drama I'm bitching about.

I will surely keep everyone updated as soon as we know something. Thanks, again, for the concern and positive thoughts.
