What's gone wrong with trance?

I don't mean to be another one bleeting on about '99 being the best year for trance (because I actually think 00/01 were ace), but it really seems the times are running dry at the moment. The number of really good hands-in-the-air energetic uplifting pieces of music is just dying, what's going on?

With MOS & Cream putting out desperatly commercial cheese on their latest albums, I feel furious that people like Flip & Fill, Scooter and to an extent Ian van Dahl have turned naff cheese into the public and label's perception of trance. I KNOW people have to make some money, but didn't they do just fine before they were cashing in on the naff drivel?

I was speaking to Tim Stark @ ATCR last week and he said "...you've still got some time to make a name in it, but with the state trance is going right now, hurry up...". I thought if he's thinking that, what hope do we have?

Why is there so little being made? Above & Beyond and Corsten seem to be the only ones regularily putting stuff out. I am sure it's still being MADE, but why don't we get any of it?
Mosaic
well, looking back on the year, there has been all kinds of mint stuff come out. You just need to look harder because of all the cheese in the foreground.

I'm at work right now, so I don't have time to compile a list of the year's top tunes.

but, as of RIGHT NOW, little is being released because its the fall. There aren't as many parties happening now, and producers are settling in and just starting the real production season.

Early 2003 should be exciting, with Chicane back, and Rank 1 punching out singles off Symsonic.

He He the tracklist for Cream Trance Anthems 2003 pissed you off as much as me did it? I know that a lot of stuff is heading commercial these days, and it's because people have spotted a trend, but instead of trance shifting it's style within the genre it's more like a new genre, cheesyeuroe has been created (or just borrowed from countries that it is alreasy established in).

It's just businesmen (not musicians) spotting an easily exploitable trend. I mean, if you look at the year for uplifting productions I think there have been some quality top notch ones, (Solarcoaster, I'm Alone, If You Want Me just off the top of my head) and It'l continue till the end of the year. I reckon you just gotta look for it.

Not to mention the development of other styles even further (Prog and Hard Trance to name the two that have grown the most for me).

On another note though, when a genre is relatively new all of the sounds are new and everything your listening to is a new experience. But after we've been listening for a few years now, just banging an uplifting synth over the same old same old chord progression is just gonaa piss people off. If you think we're not hearing enough hands in the air quality , it maybe because people simply aren't making anything refreshing enough...

No worries mate :) Now is the time you should bite through. If you look hard enough you'll still find some quality trance. When trance arrives at its peak it'll collapse and only the true producers will keep on producing (same thing happened to hardcore).

Right now you see that trance is dividing into 2 trends: commercial and quality (nothing new there). The commercial trance is only easier to find and is getting released by the dozens.

I also think trance will get a 'newer' and different sound then we were used to ('99 trance). In two or three years time trance will probably be underground again and the trance that'll be produced by then won't sound anything like e.g. System F - Out Of The Blue or Rank 1 - Airwave.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a soothsayer or something :D I just think this will happen (it also happened to hardcore). Trance will not die nor will it loose its quality.

Yeh it was the Cream one that did it to me :( Yeah I guess it's kinda the time of year. Just hadn't seen much recommended in this forum that really took me. God forbid I'm tiring of, I'm sure its not that!

u should try the new gatecrasher compilation...its pretty good and not cheesy

I agree with the new GC pink 3 pack, its quite good, esp 2nd and 3rd cd.

But have you seen Ministry of Sounds Annual 2003? Its fooking cheddar!! My god... its so bad!!

Trance is what got me into DJing back in 99, but what has it done...? I agree the commercial stuff is taking the piss out of the genre but producers want to make money, and the only way to combat westlife and gang is to lay cheesy vocals onto what they call a dance track. Only way to get ppl to buy the damn stuff, kids anyway.

Because that music has been so popular for 3-4 years now. Its getting stale. The producers and DJ's dont have anything new except most of the same recycled sounds and construction. Not that I dont enjoy listening to it, and not that I want to bash producers and dj's for making/playing what they love, I just dont enjoy it as much as I used to. I just havent seen much of anything new and creative done with trance in the past 3 years, so Im starting to broaden my interests and find new things to listen to. Spare me the "trance will never die" routine, please.

Really the only "trance" (I dont like genre labeling anyways) producer/dj who has kept my interest consistantly for the past few years is PvD. His productions and sets always sound fresh and interesting to me (for the most part).
