It's almost like some lawmakers had never heard of this "VPN technology". :o

Not all VPNs are as without logs even if promised. Be wary.

Yeah, a couple of the more popular/heavily advertised VPNs had security breaches/compromises and/or got caught logging user activity. I recall Nord VPN getting compromised, which made me chuckle. When Sherlock was all the rage, I had a coworker/friend that was using software VPNs regularly to get around the BBC region block (or whatever it was) that prevented people in the US from watching the series until later. At his point, I assume if someone is touting "security" as a feature of their product or service, they've been hacked already; if they are touting "user privacy," I assume they are logging the out of my data and selling it.

You can set up secure Shadowsocks connections with providers that you know are safe for a bit more control, Tutanova for email, and Telegram for messaging.

My day job is IT/infosec in banking, as you know, so I've always had to keep up with at least a passing familiarity with all of the various techniques for achieving anonymous traffic on the Internet...but I never actually went through the motions to implement any of them, even just as a test for personal use. I assumed that by the time I would have done so, the bulk of my Internet usage (at the time) had already occurred and the data was recorded/logged already...so very much fixing the barn door after the departing of the equestrian. One of my coworkers ran a PC repair shop on the side for a couple of decades, and he had a handful of customers, usually running some Linux variant, that really took the "anonymous browsing" stuff to heart. Sometimes they would have a functionality/configuration issue and bring it by for the coworker to check out. I can't imagine living in a country where I actually feared government/authorities enough to make me engage in a conscious effort to actively hide my traffic, daily, though. But, we probably passed that point here in the US long ago, and I'm just a frog in steadily warming waters, moments away from boiling, croaking "this is fine!". ;)

You want to test how secure your personal data is?? Really piss off a few million Chinese people. You'll find out pretty quickly that what you thought might be safe, really isn't.

I don't know how you can work in IT and still make less than my immigrant wife who speaks Chinglish:p

At this point I assume: 1.) everyone that does NOT need access to my data already has it; 2.) the two or three people that DO need access to my data do NOT have it.

My income is a function of the area of TN I live in. I could take my degree and my CISSP certification and move to Nashville or Chattanooga and probably triple or double my income, respectively. But that would, to me personally, be a decrease in the quality of life I perceive. Where I am at now, I can work from home 99% of the time; I don't have any traffic to deal with; property taxes and utilities are very low; I can walk around on 70 acres any time I want to step out of the door. But, you're right, it's a pretty low income for a job/industry that can, and does, pay more.

Jesus Christ.

"a decrease in quality of life"

Make up your mind lol

I just mean that I could move to a larger city and make more income...but I would have a lower quality of life in the sense that the increased anxiety from living in a city would far outweigh the increase in money. I'd rather live paycheck to paycheck than deal with the crushing anxiety of being in a city. Maybe that's sad, but I am simply being honest.

We may, indeed, be ed...but you'll need a VPN or Jay's credit card to watch it! :p:o
