They probably don't even know it exists, Del. I consider myself lucky: I was born and raised in the south, in a very rural town in TN, and yet I was lucky to have intelligent, educated parents (both with master's level degrees) who were not racist or crazy evangelical types. They let us be ourselves, they educated us, they encouraged us, they helped us but let us be independent, and they never tried to instill into us any prejudices. They had good, steady jobs and good incomes, especially for the area. I truly dodged a bullet. |
