INFORMATION: Windows XP, making it a safer O/S.

Well my time has come to format my PC, and an XP installation is near. My question to you guys is how can WINDOWS XP be made into a safer environment from hackers etc. Or even a more stable OS as a whole?
If you have any input on how to protect your computer while using XP, please provide a detailed way to correct a problem or flaw (ie. restricting printer / file sharing etc)
Please give me a hand here guys, with a noob explanation on how to fix the problem(s). It's appreciated and I thank you ahead of time :gsmile:

Well, windows in general is swiss cheese, you will never make it totally protected.
regarding XP, here is one particularly nasty vulnerability that will allow an attacker to delete any file on your hard drive just by clicking a link:

There are many, MANY more holes though.
I advise you to at the very least get an antivirus program, I suggest Norton Antivirus.
Also, get a firewall, I suggest ZoneAlarm.
These programs (unlike most junk on the net) are WORTH PAYING FOR. |

Yah, as john said, you should definately get an AV program. I prefer Norton AV, cuz McAffeefefef is starting to suck really bad, and Norton's actually getting better.
Regarding XP, first, make sure you use Professional, not Home Edition, and definately update to SP1.
Also, for a firewall, if you can, get a hardware firewall, like a little linksys router, there only about $100 canadian... Plus you can share the internet with all the computers in your house with it.
As far as file sharing is concerned, disable it all, unless you need to share anything, then just make sure it's password protected. (Not much more you can do than that.)

| Lets say I know somebody with a slightly fishy copy of XP. How would he, in theory, go about upgrading to SP1 with an invalid key? Our of interest. |

after having not much luck with Win XP i hav decided to use win2000. are there any major vulnerabilities like the one u pointed out for XP? And if so how can you protect yourself from them. I hear 2000 pro is most stable out the lot of them |

well.. 2000 is OK.
probably MORE secure than XP, but of course that doesn't mean it's impossible to get broken into if you are using 2000.
and, as far as win2000 goes, there are all different kinds of that, win2k pro, win2k server, win2k advanced server, etc. you'd probably have pro though i imagine.
personally, i use XP for my workstation, i like it's features. My company uses win2k server for our servers, and we haevn't gotten hacked. we have external firewall protection, and keep everything patched, but that is no guarantee it only reduces the likelihood
the key thing to know is, the only way you can ever truly be safe, is to unplug your network card. sorry but that's the truth.
it's like saying, how can i go out downtown late at night and not get mugged? should i bring a knife? or a gun? maybe an armored car?
it don't matter, there is always the possibility. either don't go out, or be prepared to research the risks. |

i thought a good router was a way of stopping it happening. Like doesnt it make it so u havnt got an IP, and therfore hacking cannot occur.. or something like that |

just kidding. I can tell you this. if you try to upgrade and you did not by XP it will rat you out automatically. There is a way around it though..
