okay then let's say that the noise thing is true...can someone explain to me why the pro ME's are using plugins such as the waves ones?
I simply have a hard time believing it when they still use it :p |

Maybe the noise levels that are added to the sound when adding plugins are acceptable, in that you can't hear it. I also still have a hard time believing this...

the noise levels are acceptable to an extent. If you are using a resonable amount of plugins its no worry and especially if they are quality ones like the Waves plugins even less worry. In fact you will most likely never hear the noise even if you using alot of plugins at once. Its just the nature of the beast that adding plugin after plugin is gonna introduce some amount of unwanted noise and maybe some unwanted digital artifacts.Given its not gonna destroy your mix and you probably wont hear it most of the time. But if you can get away with 5 plugins as oppsed to 10 then go with 5. |

hmm well the things you wrote before are reasonable, sounds pretty logic but still...my brain ain't getting it but whatever :)
so let's say we want to skip the plugins/effects-line...what other ways of mastering is there? |

Great thread guys. I've just recently gotten into mastering and I'm trying to fill my brain with as much as possible. It can seem overwhelming that is for sure! Anyways, I did come across this mastering FAQ which I found to be quite helpful so check it out.

It references many software apps that will help us all with mastering. |

I think I have found an article which desribes this problem. Read it (I know it's long!) and you should be better able to understand why adding effects and modulating sounds decreases the quality of your sound.

| Is it due to rounding errors? |

| yeah, it has got to do with rounding errors. |

i feel like an idiot for reading this far and not knowing this but,
whats the difference between a mixdown and mastering?? |
|
|
| dj-sean |
| The mixdown is the recording of your track from whatever audio platform you're using, and the mastering is done afterwards when the track is in wav/aiff format. Mastering changes are usually small changes to bring out the bass a little or make your track a little more crisp sounding, or to compress it to increase overall loudness. |
