| what about em? you can create 3d text effects on their own. ya konw? creating that pseudo 3d effect. (essentially that's what 3d text effects are anyway, lol) just gotta know where your light source is and apply the shadows/darker areas on the text and highlights where applicable. |

thanks for all the ideas...but i dont have a single program on my comp that has a light source feature in it..i have an idea abt what u're saying tho...btw, r u a pro web designer or what

good i'm glad ya know what i'm sayin'. :) but you don't need to actually HAVE a light source, as long as you can 'picture' your light source. like lets say i wanted my light source to be in the top left, then my shadows would be around the lower-right regions of my text and my highlights would be in the top left. you can create 3d text with just a paintbrush tool in ms paint even, just like you can create the illusion of 3d in a painting. :) hope that helps.
as for your question, yah, i guess you can say i am a professional web/gfx designer. i'm currently freelance right now but am gonna be working @ blast radius in the summer and for then 6 months after august. sweet. heh. if you haven't already seen some of the sigs i've done for ppl on TA.
i.e. sugarbean, jddark, rainbowbrite, b16 integra.
check out the chillout room under a thread called "sigs! sigs! get ya sigs here! :)"
here i'll give ya an example of something that i whipped up in photoshop a few days ago for the hell of it. keep in mind it's totally 2d. but LOOKS 3d. light source is north.

If you've got photoshop, you can use the Lighting effects filter to apply 3d effects to text:
Filter>Render>Lighting Effects...
old photoshop stuff still used today. If you have version 5+ of PS, then you can also use the "bevel" layer effect. |

yup. that's right! another good reason to use photoshop. :) but for print, photoshop is NOT what you want to use at all. photoshop is slowly beginning to lean towards the vector side of the spectrum, however, in the end, the file is still largely pixel-based. |

Whenever I work with rasterized graphics for print, I make sure the resolution is turned up at least to 300 DPI so the result will look clear when printed. Vectors are limited when it comes to photographic-images, you just gotta work around it the old fashioned way. (with huge 99 meg PSD files. hehe)
For standard 2d work w/o photographic qualities, that's where id stick to vector drawing (illus., freehand, etc). Far more efficient. |

oh yeah, definitely. if it's photographic quality you're working with. jpeg is the way to go. jpeg was designed with the use of pictures in mind. heh. once you scan em in anyway, 300 dpi is totally fine for screen or for small prints. but when it starts to get large, which is sometimes the case with me, 800 dpi and all the way to 1200 dpi is the way to go. :) thank god i have access to facilities that can hold and run this blazingly quick. hehehe.
but yeah, as far as logos go. illustrator/freehand works fine. :) |

d00d...r u into animations as well or what..cos i heard the computers they use are state-of-the-art...deadly fast

you mean 3d animation? not so much...i'm not really interested in it, not my field you can say. ;) hehehe. but i got dozens upon dozens of contacts from peepz @ alias wavefront to toybox (toybox does movie animation and gfx like the ones found in jurassic park) alias wavefront should be self explanatory. they're HUGE. hehe.
but as for your question about the computers they use. yes they're realllly high end. there are actually organizations and companys that will render your animations and for you on their machines for a fee of course, becuse sometimes your animations (if you're in the professional field) tends to get quite...well, complex and the render times can take days, sometimes even months to finish rendering, even on really high end systems. |
