i encode a song......
.wav file = 44.9 megs
.mp3 @ 256 = 08.1 megs
.ogg @ 128 = 03.8 megs |
hmm, interesting point, but you didnt say what mp3 codec you used. You will get far better mp3's if you use LAME 3.92, VBR, alt prestet standard, with EAC , than if you use Music match jukebox, or another equally bad prog  :tongue3 |

| All my Music files are .ogg but as far as ogg killing mp3, I dont know but its definatly a possiblity because ogg is open-source so you dont have to worry about licensing fees like you do with mp3's. As a matter of fact Unreal Tournament 2003 uses ogg for its music files. |

that's what they said about .wma some time ago, and how many of you use .wma instead of .mp3? i don't, and i won't. |
First of all- *.wma is way more populer then *.ogg
As a matter of fact, I only heared bout *.ogg a few days ago while *.wma is more populer to the scene.
In any case- the thing with *.wma is that it has a downside to it which is much higher cpu lading then mp3, that's why I was looking for downsides to *.ogg (and which to this point were reported none).

The OGG format is indeed capable of more things than mp3 and at lower size. |

Ogg is alright, but until it gets more widespread usage it's pretty worthless... |
Guess it's time to spread it arround then eh?

the good thing about mp3 is that there are soo many mp3 players out there..i mean portable and car mp3 player...if the start releasing ogg capable players...then its a diff story...but i like mp3..so. |
Once it will catch arround they'll start making merchandise for *.ogg, just like they did when *.mp3 first caught on.

The most important thing about ogg is that it is FREE, and Fraunhofer can't charge programmers and developers for using the mp3 format. WMA is microsoft, so same story.
But of course, it will never be more popular, like how buzz will never be more popular that fruity loops, and linux will never be more popular than windows, and people will always buy computers from dell. |

| mp3 will always be withus, as it was the first out there and any format will be hard pressed to replace it, even if it is techinacally bettter, microsoft couldnt force wma on us with all its $$$$$$$$$. |
