Well, seeing as how the production ftp is a big sucess it might be time to step it up to the next level :) I'm thinking of building a website which will showcase amature productions and dj's.
It'll have a members section for registered people to upload their stuff etc and track how other people are doing. Showing when producers have uploaded more stuff, progress on traks etc. Of course the finished products will be publicly available on the site, and the patches, samples, loops etc will still be private for registered members.
I'd like feedback on what type of features to have, general interest etc. Of course, I'm not sure exactly how i'm going to code all this, but it's a challenge i'm looking forward to. This of course won't just be for trance addcits, but for anyone activly pursuing trance related production. All membership applicants will still be screened to make sure they arn't applying to mooch and that they actually have stuff to contribute.
Only problem I forsee is BANDWIDTH. I've just got cable at home with a capped upload stream of like 35k/sec which is NOT enough for an endevor like this. Of course if the site is popular I could see about advertising to cover costs, feedback on this would also be great.
Put your thinking caps on! |

I've wanted to do something like this for some time (my original idea was to host a site for DJs to post mixes). This (i.e. money) is the same problem I ran into rather shortly after coming up with the idea. :)
I still have no idea how to solve it. I can't see any obvious way of making it work, though I have a few ideas.
mp3.com (and other sites as well) already will allow you to post songs, but it would be nice to have other features, such as, perhaps:
- ability to post, and access to, original channels for remixes
- some sort of good rating system (mp3.com's is biased toward people with money and/or people willing and able to advertise)
- DJ sets
- some sort of system to allow DJs to work out deals with producers. I could imagine some DJs coming to this site, finding a song they like, and buying exclusive rights to a particular song. Being the only DJ that plays a particularly good song would be a pretty huge advantage, and producers just starting up would probably be really happy to [a] get money for a song, and [b] know that one of their songs is out there being played. (I know I would... :))
- patches, samples, loops (as you mentioned already).
- literature related to composition and/or DJing.
There is probably a lot more stuff that would be cool.
One problem I forsee would be ensuring everything is legal. That would take a LOT of man hours. One possible fix, perhaps, would be to make every check a box saying their stuff is not illegal. Don't know how well that sort of thing does in a court case, though. Probably need a lawyer's advice.
Possible solutions to the money problem (one or more of the following):
- anyone who wants to upload has to pay some fee (it would probably have to be something small, like $5/month, or $10/song or something -- maybe first song could be free...).
- premium services could be pay-only.
- advertising
- hardware/bandwidth donations (don't know how viable this is, but I know it happens).
- some really rich founder... :p
If you DO want to try to start this up, I would be more than happy to do web development work on it (design and/or scripting work), or possibly some sysadmin work. I have several years of experience doing web development, and I am currently a sysadmin for a smallish dotcom company. I think this idea is really, really good, provided some solution is worked out for the financing issues. |

Well, during beta stages of the site I don't need lots of bandwidth, I can gague useage by having a test base from people at tranceaddict or whatever. MP3.com is great, but I want to have a smaller more refined site, centering around trance. Dj sets, tracklisting, bio's are all musts as well as production stuff, production will require more work and features though.
Legality issues are not that difficult, there would be a waiver everytime you go to upload something which would state something along the lines of: by uploading this material you certify that it has been created by you and you are the owner blah blah. As well as a statement saying that I am meerly providing a service and am not responsible for people's uploads.
I could see having a small fee of like 5$ per song uploaded, or maybe a bandwidth fee of say, .10 per 5megs transfered. Once everything is setup I can just go through the logs and see what gets used most.
Starting this up is a priority for me, i'm going to school for network design and all that jazz so it gives me a chance to get lots of experiance writting my own CGI/Perl scripts and running web/ftp/email servers. I'm also a DJ and starting into production, and I know that unless you "know the right people" it's very hard to get your out, so having more avenues like this is benifitial.
Main help I'd be looking for is the front end stuff, I love running servers and doing backend work but designing a website and making graphics that look good isn't my strong point :) |

I'd be happy to do some front end work. With more than one person working on stuff, there is going to be a lot of planning to do, keep in mind.
About the legal stuff, I'd still check with a lawyer (if you happen to know one... :)) about it, because if the site becomes "real," you want to make sure the legal stuff won't bite you in the ass. |

| I do know a lawyer actually, and rest assured when the site is nearing final stages of completion i'll give him the run down and find out what issues need to be addressed. |

First it was couple of people in a Forum making tracks at home
Than they opened a special FTP for samples and patches
Than the FTP turns to be a Top Trance production site
Than They make their own label: TA,
and than Tieasto & AvB & everybody join TA label
and we are all happy :wtf: |

I would love to help out in any way I can :)
I think it sound's like a good idea that for once hasn't been taken already...or well...we have mp3.com but they are aiming at all genres.....not just trance
I think it can be successful if you aim at a single genre like trance fór example :) |

about the payment I don't really know....maybe it should be free to have one song uploaded but if you want to upload more than one song you could take a fee
I feel that as a producer that hasn't reached the state where you can make money on it's hard to get up with the money to pay for every song that I wan't to upload
so you can have the system where you can have one song uploaded at once for free...and then it would be alowed to switch song as much as you like so you always can have your newest song uploaded...then if you wan't more than one you have to pay...say 5$ per song or something like that
hope you get what I mean with this ;) |

yes, that's important because of possible copyright problems of published tracks.

if your track is that good, you shouldn't sell the rights to another DJs, you should sent it to a label...

I support your idea of the new site, please keep us informed !
