some of the older stuff is better in my view, it seems more uplifting and happy.....whereas dark moody trance is becoming *hip* these days......it's all good, as long as they continue making all kinds, shouldn't ever get boring...

yep i get the same feeling here too. i am much more fond of the older tunes than the new ones. not that i think the new ones are bad or anything, but it just didn't hit me in the same way as the older trance did. i think how i would describe it is that most of the older trance really took me on a journey, so to speak. the trance nowadays, with the exception of a few tracks, hardly does that for me now. i guess thats why sometimes i get a little thrilled when a DJ like PvD or Tiesto etc...throws an oldie into the mix.

Kamaya Painters - Endless Wave
Fire & Ice - Out of Darkness
Cafe Del Mar - Energy 52 (Three 'n One Remix)
BBE - Seven days and one week

What a Classics.......

I have noticed that the tracks these days are sounding more and more progressive. I started listening to trance music back in late 1998 and I was hooked on stuff from Ayla, Tilt, and Lange but now , when I hear that stuff, it kinda bores me (I suppose listening to it 100+ times will do that) and there are only a few classics that really affect me today. Stuff like, Gouryella : Wallhalla, Tilt : Invisible, Rapid Eye : Never Going Back. I have grown to like the direction trance is moving in and I doubt we'll ever see a complete loss of uplifting melodic trance.. It would just be too depressing and we'd have a lot of suicides out there. Check out some of the latest sets from PVD and Tiesto and you'll notice a nice mix of progressive tunes, hardhouse floorfillers and sweet melodic trance. You can't go wrong with a PVD set! (except the one he did at Mayday 2001 was really wonked). That's the beauty of trance, you can go through such a range of emotions.. Try saying that about Rap , Hip Hop, Rock and Roll and some of the other krap we have to listen to in North America. Living in western CAnada, there are absolutely NO stations that play trance and if I didn't have my collection of mp3s and my CD player, I'd go insane!! Everytime someone turns on a local radio station I just want to scream.. How can people listen to this krap!!?!

I in love the newer stuff, with the prog feel :D cant get enough of the stuff.. but im a firm beleiver that they dont make uplifting/melodic trance like they used to... 98 and 99 were awesome years fr these.. u simply cant beat art of trance - madagascar (pulser mix) & gouryella.. stuff like that, but now a few years on they are still tryin to make the same sound.. and peepz iz gettin bored of it. thus the switch to progressive :D:D (just listen to tiesto now..)

theres differences between older more epic trance, than the current trance scene..
to me.. the 97-98 trance is the floaty more dreamy side of things... whereas it because very uplifting and powerful throughout 2000.. then now its heading progressive.. ack that word.. but yea..
i personally like trance 98-early 00 =p

Progressive..isnt a certain type of sound or anything when you really look at it every style of trance was progressive one time or the other...well a form of it...Progressive is just a word meaning the genre is in a transitional period where its changing its self..... Old Progressive is totally different then New progressive...... Trance will go in a progressive a few years until it finds a dominating sup genre of trance which it can expande !!! Thats how i see it!

Space Brothers "Forgiven" - Nov 97
Dannii "All I Wanna Do" (Trouser Enthusiasts Mix) - June 97
BT "Flaming June" - July 97

Disco Citizens "Footprint" - March 97
Airscape "Pacific Melody" - July 97
Chicane "Sunstroke" - May 97
Chicane "Lost You Somewhere" (Oct 97)

Nowadays you just don't get any tunes as good as these!

Some other good old tunes:

Heliotropic "Walk With Me" - 1996
Cosmic Baby "Fantasia" - 1994
Visions Of Shiva "Perfect Day" - 1993
Salt Tank "Eugina" - 1996

Here's what I have to say on this matter:

Some time ago I bought Kimball Collins' ICU Generation Trance 2000, consisting mainly of epic and uplifting anthems. I was blown away by "Communication" (Armin van Buuren) and many other melodic, high-energy tunes on that CD, with powerful synths and strong beats.

At about the same time I got Tiesto's Summerbreeze, the only US release featuring Tiesto, and it too was a great collection of fast melodic trance. The track "Wonder Where You Are," by Tiesto/Armin van Buuren, was a masterpiece.

Then recently I got to see both Collins and Tiesto live, and guess what kind of trance they both spun? Nothing but mind-numbing, dull, colorless drum-n-bass "progressive" stuff with no melody, little excitement, no variety at all, just kick-and-snare noise that made everything sound the same. I'm not saying I'm completely against this kind of trance, but building the whole set around it made the event boring, at least for me.

Also, a few days ago I downloaded (thanks to this site) Armin van Buuren's mix, "Live @ Dance Dept." From the author of such powerful melodic anthems as the ones mentioned above, I surely expected a lot more than this bland, uninteresting progressive drum-and-bass. It is danceable, all right. But it doesn't evoke any emotions, and it's not interesting.

Lets not try 2 fall off of subject :D.... The thread is about thinking old trance tracks bettr than new ones and people opinions about this topic... Not about how or why Dj's spin what they do now... Keep it on topic!! The reason for this is because I see good threads that start of with a good topic but then turn into a big debate... Lets try to keep it on the good topic :D...
