the world would be a better place without porn, imo. |
Sex crimes are unilaterally less prevalent in nations and regions where the availability of pornographic material is relatively high.
In fact, a culture's or subculture's degree of sexual repressiveness exhibits a direct and inverse relationship to the frequency of acts of sexual depravity. Catholic priests and theocracies in the middle east are good examples of this phenomenon.
Empirical evidence unfalteringly suggests that the world would be a significantly better place were the availability of pornography more widespread. If there were some kind of charitable foundation dedicated to brining porn to overprotected children, I'd give them money.

I have to disagree with you. Porn is far from natural. A bunch of people being paid to have sex is not natural. |
1. That which is derived from nature is natural. (by def. of natural)
2. Human beings are derived from nature. (premise)
3. Porn is created by human beings. (premise)
4. That which is created by something is also derived from it. (by def. of derive)
5. Porn is derived from nature. (by 2-4)
6. Porn is natural. (1,5)

hmm.. very interesting and cogent point of view arbiter, I love your posts. In a way i agree with you, in a sense that repressing it can make it worse, as in the example of catholic priests and such.
However, i think that in modern western society, we've erred on the side off too much exposure, and oversaturated the culture with sexuality. you can't turn on much music or walk down a magazine aisle without seeing reams of airbrushed flesh waved in your face.
I believe that this is not neccesarily increasing the amount of depravity, but rather diminishing the sacrosanct nautre of sexuality.
it coiuld be argued that keeping the population satisfied with porn makes it a better place by keeping hormones low, but i believe that it would be better to keep sex a very rare and personal thing.
Take the resulting people that can't deal with the repression who would commite rapes and abuses and lock them up where they shoud be.
It should be noted i don't think that people who look at "standard" porn (ie consenting adults) should be prosecuted, as they are not hurting anyone but themselves.

while i am a huge fan of logic, by this train, crack cocaine, murder, war, genetic modification, racism, genocide, etc are all natural.
and, i suppose they are, i just hope you don't equate natural with right or good. |

Well, too much of anything is bad, but I'm just not sure I agree that we have reached that point. I share your opinion that there a certain types of porn that ought to be regulated much more seriously, and some of those types might be a bit too easy to get one's hands on.
The reason there's so much sexuality in our culture is because there is such a high demand for sexuality in our society. The entertainment and advertising industries wouldn't be cranking it out like they are if it didn't prove itself to meeting demands most efficiently.
I think the main cause of our different opinions is the way we view sexuality. You have a fairly reverent view of sex, which is something I can understand and respect. But personally, I've reached a point in my life where sex isn't quite magical in that same sense anymore. To me, it's basically just something fun to do on a rainy tuesday afternoon, if you get my meaning.

If all that was natural was good, there would be no evil.

yes, our difference does come from our differing points of view on sexuality.
if it is truly only a pleasure of the body like for example scratching an itch, then by all means scratch your itches. look at other people scrathing theirs, get itchy from it, and then scratch your own if you like. or get people to scratch, several different people across a few days time if you like, or even a few at once if your into that sort of thing ;)
i hope you get my drift.
too me, sometimes sex is just scratching an itch, sometimes it is only for fun, sometimes it is out of neccesity, sometimes it is out of lust, sometimes boredom, drunkeness etc. and in those times, it really is just sex, just like scratching an itch 9although intensely more pleasurable though.
there are however, times when it is much more than that. A primal connecting of two people, mind body and soul linked together. These times are rare, but are the mosts powerful experiences i have ever had.
See for me, i am 23 years old, been with my girlfriend for 8 years, and we will be married next fall. We have taken sex beyond where most have. we've explored our bodies, learned each others likes and dislikes, studied the art of lovemaking, read books on tantra, decorated our room in a sensual way.
all this effort is worth it, the benefits are massive. |
