What makes a track "cheesy"? (pg. 4)

i define cheese as [but i like cheese :)]
simple melody
not many layers of music, e.g like with hip hop [beat, bass, sound fx, rapping]
vocals - just cannot stand them, crap like lasgo and ian van dahl etc - dubs and unvocals i can live with
the 'monotone' sound like with flip n fill - take my breath away, u will see the difference compared with some of dumonde's stuff
mixed elements, e.g like with a trance track u have elements of everything like some breakbeat/dnb and the occasional rap etc

thats my verdict...

Not cheese, COMMERCIAL . C-O-M-M-E-R-C-I-A-L.

Saying cheese just sound more degrading so no one says that about the almighty Silence (Tieso remix) but the fact is it got commercialised and playing it today on a party will lure your avrage spice girl and lasgo fan to the floor.

what would normaly make a tune cheesy would be the beat or the sound affects used in the tunes for example try listen to
''Dj aligator - The whistle song'' if u dare and listen to that pile of cheese it will scare you to death

I just don't get this at all. Why would you listen to music that doesn't make you happy? Doesn't that kind of defest the purpose? I sure don't turn on some tunes so that I can feel ty...

I doubt that Marco V or Mauro Picotto makes you want to hug people or think about fuzzy bunny rabbits just like Marilyn Mansons music wouldn't.

Like the others have said, people have different ideas of 'cheesy'...to me, cheesy is a track which is extremely predictable, has few layers and just overall has that sound to it that makes me cringe - especially soppy vocals :)

cheese, IMHO, is very bad vocals where sometimes you can predict the next word. cheese is a tune which makes me feel stupid, instead of throwing my hands up in the air. a cheesy tune makes me wanna cry, cringe, shrug, and cover my ears. sometimes a cheesy tune will have an overly long and emotionally stupid breakdown. sorta like jappop.

a combination of one or all of those will make me stay away from track. now, COMMERCIAL music is something different.

Lustral - Broken (Way out West Mix)
Aurora - Ordinary World (Above and Beyond Mix)
Lange f Skye - Drifting Away

Would these be "cheesy"?

I'd really appreciate if someone could help me get a better understanding of this idea. I tend to listen to what I like, I don't really care whether it's cheesy or not...

First off, Lustral and Lange = not cheesy (I dunno about the original mix of Drifting Away though, as the Sunset Dub and World Clique mixes were pretty tight.)

Secondly, don't worry about what others think are cheesy. Worry about what YOU like.

Thirdly, anything with a "Rave Organ Lead" is getting QUITE tired and formulaic, and one of the biggest proponents of that sound declared it dead recently. If you don't know what I'm talking about, refer to the breakdowns in Silverbath, Lost In A Dream [Push Trancendental Mix], Summer Calling [Airwave Club Mix], Sunspot [DCML Remix]. These are arguably the BEST examples of a tired sound...

Anything outside that is pretty subjective...

So basically any anthemic trance production by L-Vee or M.I.K.E.? You might find those who'd disagree...

In a nutshell, yes. You'd be surprised to know that one the two you mentioned recently declared said sound to be "dead". I'd agree.
