Apparently Sony has made a bid to buy out the Boxed Boys. (more details to follow)

And that's exactly what should happen... if industry wants to get anywhere these days. That way, they might make less of that crap they put out on CDs, and we might actually buy more... but hey, I'm just fine with all these free MP3s around!

And yeah, people still buy Vinyl (me included), but that's mostly DJs and wannabe DJs...

I agree, I too would not have had a chance to explore and get to love trance, house, breaks, etc if it were not for the ability to download for free and try. Now, I would definitely be willing to pay for the CDs that I hear and like, but not at the current prices. The industry has just not progressed with the times. How could a CD still be sold for the same price as when they first came out? That's ridiculous. Honestly, if they were say, five bucks each, I'd buy EVERY DAMN CD I have in mp3 that I listen too. That's cuz I like the better quality, moving between tracks, artwork, and to support the artist. Yeah, 5 bucks is not much, but imagine how many more they would sell. Alternatively, they could provide it in download format (high quality) for a couple of bucks and I'd still pay to download even if it's just to support the industry.

Now, although I rarely buy a CD these days, I too think that I do contribute a fair bit by paying to see DJ's live. But I'm not sure how much of that money (if any) ever makes it to those artists that make the original tracks. Can anyone enlighten me?

i don't blame people for d/l cds off the web. i'm naive in the sense that the cds sound better than mp3s and i don't have a problem shelling out cash for artists that i respect. i own all the gus except the de vit cds up to #19. after that, i became selective of who i buy from the nu breeds/gu/prototype/after hours/lawler/...

i agree that it's expensive to shell out $33? for the 2 discs when you can leach it off the web. as well, the quality has gone downhill. people can't differentiate all this crap with ibiza/chillout/trance compilations with van dahl/atb/sammy/...from quality stuff like both of sasha's comp from san francisco and ibiza.

I personally like CD1 a tiny bit better because of the last 4 tracks on it...such an amazing sequence. CD2 is amazing as well.

I own the following from GU:

GU 009
GU 013

nubreed 002
nubreed 003
nubreed 004
nubreed 005

I'm planning on picking up one of Seaman's GU's next...

I can proudly say that I don't own a single one of those CDs... the last CD I bought was Hernan Cattaneo's "In South America" (out of a respect!) a few months ago, and before that I really can't remember when I bought a single CD!
If I can get it for free, why not take advantage of that? I pay my props to all those artists I download in MP3 format by actually shelling out $20-30 to see them live once they come by here (the money I save by not buying CDs).

^ Hmm, yeah that doesn't make any sense. You are right, spending money on stuff you don't have too is always fun. But just because you support the artist at a party doesn't mean all that much.

Why would you be proud to be ripping off an artist?

You should be proud because you are the cheapest person I know. :(

I have downloaded full GU cd's as well, personally I'm ashamed. Because of this freebie attitude I'm watching the industry I love crumble in front of me. I can honestly say that I will fully support GU 24 and bite the bullet. I may not be able to splurge on groceries, but it's a simple fact, music comes before breakfast. lol

Hi guys thought i'd drop in and add my .02 cents worth.

I think what music and record labels should have done ages ago is started distributing music online for a fee. I own a fair few of GU's stuff btw but half the reason i'd prefer to download something is because i don't have to walk to the CD store and buy it. as well as my thoughts that cds are overpriced.

Now if instead of losing money blindly, they'd started allowing people to download their tunes for a fee, something small like say 1.50 a song or something then i'd do that. I haven't got a problem supporting an artist but i have a problem with overpricing and plain laziness. This way they'd maybe make more money since everyone could afford to support them. At some point or another there's going to be a qualification as far as online piracy and music prices and distribution methods go.

Well the balls in their court now i guess

Ripping off an artist that gets only 1% of the profit made from CD sales? Hmm, I'd rather support the artist by paying a portion of his booking fee for the club/event appearances... That way I know my money got to him!

hrmzzz.. wells u gotta point, but i dunno if that model would necessarily work better than the way it is now. Say they do resell secured music online. There would still be ways of recording this music with software on ur own computer during playback and encoding it into some open standard. ie. mp3 and then having it redistributed.. and once's it's in mp3 format and being swapped, it'll spread like a viral infectiong again affecting the online sales one would normally have to pay for.

personally i just think that the entire industry is undergoing a revolution where the "value" of music itself is going to be redefined forever. Cuz when you look at it in the end, whether it's digital and/or analog, if you can play it back on some kind of hardware, it can be re-recorded into something unsecured and re-digitized.

good point. but its a little less than 5%. for like 17 bucks...the artist gets a dollar or something like that. BUT, for things like GU or artists that have their own record label...that number is much higher.

There are some major rumours going around msg boards that our beloved GU series has gone (pardon my french) ' up'. Apparently the boxed boys bit off more than they can chew and are now pulling out of everything they were gonna release. IE: Nick Warren Iceland and yes... Deep Dish Toronto. Yep that's right, there is speculation that both comps will probably NOT be released.

This is the worst news I've heard all day. I really hope it's just a rumour, however with all the recent labels shutting down it's more than probable, but rather expected now.

RIP GLOBAL UNDERGROUND???

If so run out and get any GU you don't have. In particular, Oakenfold New York, Sasha Ibiza, Deep Dish Moscow blah blah blah. Please say it aint so Joe!

I really hope its a Rumor.
