link to a p4 runnin at 4.1 ghz, now id like to see a amd run that fast and stable at the same time

While it is true that intel's cpus lately are indeed faster than the amd's (although that's only because of software adaptations), not only that they cost much more, but the rest of the system does as well. Anyway, the price/performance ratio is on the amd side. And you don't want to support intel. Remember how much the CPUs costed, and how slowly they advanced before intel got a little competition.

Buy AMD

1) They aren't intel, intel=the devil
2) Clock for Clock AMD CPU's are much faster
3) AMD CPU's are cheaper and are still excelent quality.

My new AXP2000 (1.67GHZ) has better CPU performance then a 2.4GHZ P4. Just because you see an intel chip runing at 3GHZ doesn't mean it blows the highest end AMD chip out of the water. Don't buy into the marketing hype, buy AMD.

Hahhaaa, you're trippin' large...

As a matter of fact I am running all those programs on my AMD 1.6GHz smoother and faster than a friend of mine on the similar station with P4 2.0GHz... so, go figure!

And yeah, go with AMD, you'll get the same performance and save a lot, meaning you can now invest that money into getting better RAM or something. Unless the money isn't the problem, or you really want the top knotch performance in Video & Audio applications, get AMD!

The only downside (or a gamble) to an AMD chip is the fact that in case the fan/heatsink dies on it, the processor itself will fry in 10-15 seconds, while P4 processor would just slow down to like 700MHz or something and stay alive... but I guess they came up with a motherboard that shuts off the computer or slows down the AMD processor in case the fan dies, I just can't freakin' remember who manufactures it at the moment.

the newer asus motherboards have something where it either reduces the cpu speed or just cuts power to the cpu if it gets to a certain temperature, my dad's chaintech motherboard also has a similar feature as well.

I have a sympathy for AMD.
I love my duron 700...

I dont think that liquid cooling counts.... thats just not feasable for the most part. Back to reality.

I say AMD. The intel ships have better memory bandwidth, but thats bout it in my opinion. If u intend to do a lot of graphics editing and highly intensive apps that do not consist of games, then go with AMD. The AMD Athlon XP are much better for better for games when it comes to the graphics.

AMD 1900@ 1.6 GHz = $89.00 US
Intel P4 2.0 GHz = $165 US

And my 1900 benchmarks faster then a P4 2.0 GHz.

'nuff said.

wow guys... thanks for the many replies... I'd put up a poll but it's obvious who the winner is :D

i love my old intel p3-550. I love my new athlon XP 1.46 1700+ @ 2.0 G. It only cost me $51

thanks that there is at least ONE sane person in here.
unless your program is super-optimized for the new SSE-2 instructions, the P4 is slower clock-for-clock compared to an Athlon in ALL CASES!

The FPU on the P4 is ty as hell compared to the athlons. My roomate did a bunch of FPU intensive simulations on both a P4 and an Athlon.. ever since, he doesn't even consider intel anymore.. it was such a joke.

which will increase stability. BTW. the only reason major servers are still using intel, is because there is not a single AMD CPU/ chipset that does 4/8/n-way servers. Wait for the Opteron later this year and see if that doesn't change *fat grin*.
