What's your opinion on the best studio monitors?

Hey guys, I know this has been discussed a million times before but I want to know what your opinion of the best studio monitors are. I'm about to buy some for my apartment studio, I want the best possible sound quality for my money. I'm gonna spend up to $500-600 max. I want active monitors only. Currently I've looked at the Behringer Truth and the Tannoy Reveal Active monitors. Anybody have any suggestions or opinions on anything else or either of those?

Thanx!

Event 20/20 bas if you can find them for $600. Just found this when checking their price: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=23786 Generally I think they are $700 - $750.

Otherwise check out Event PS-8 ($599 from zzounds.com) and PS-6 (a little cheaper if you want to save a bit).

From what I understand, Behringer Truths fake sounds a fair amount. Like they fake bass to make it sound louder. Stuff like that. I don't know about the Tannoys. Be sure to thoroughly check them out if you decide to go with one of them. Read a lot of reviews on line. I was checking out the Truths for a bit, mainly because of one review I found that gave them a high score, until I read a couple reviews that said they faked it too much.

Stay away from speakers that fake it! You want brutally honest speakers for production. I went with M-Audio Studiophile SP-5B because, even though reviews said the bass was lacking a bit (which is true), they also said they are honest, nonetheless -- that the bass is wanting, but not faked (which also seems to be true -- I haven't used anything else yet). One review even said they compared very favorably to the Event 20/20 bas, which several reviews have mentioned as being the best in their range. And the Studiophiles were ~$280, so I had more money to spend on hardsynths... ;) I will likely upgrade to Event 20/20 bas next.

Hope that helps.

I got a pair of these Yorkville YSM1P active monitors. They are quality speakers at a bargain price. check this link for some reviews http://acapella.harmony-central.com/ :)

Thanks man! That's exactly what I was looking for. I've come to find out it's hard to find unbiased reviews on monitors. I guess I shoulda looked there first. :)

Damn it, when are people going to learn the first rule of monitor buying:

Try before you buy

You gotta get yourself to a store with some music you know and listen hard!
ericb
Unfortunately where I live that's not an option. We have Guitar Center if you know what that is, but they don't carry most of the speakers I'm looking for.

Hey Sage thanks again for the recommendation. I think I'm gonna go with the Yorkvilles and their YSS1 sub. Sounds like a good combination :) I didn't read one thing bad about those on any site. The only thing I read was lacking was the bass but the woofer should fill that gap.

Glad to hear you have decided to pick these gems up. I think the monitors themselves generate enough low frequency for my use. Every time I turn them up I have neighbours complaining. :whip: :whip:

Hope you get a good price on them. Even though I live like a few minutes from Yorkvilles plant, I couldn't find them for much cheaper than what its selling for in the States. There must be a demand for these speakers. :)

Yeah I'm gonna wait on the woofer to see if I really need it or not since I live in an apartment. We just got our Access Virus KC too last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :tongue3 :D I can't believe the sounds on that thing!
