i need to go buy a new one. does anyone have either dark cloud 2 or breath of fire 5? those are next on my list to buy. | ahhh i see :D Well, depending on the quality of the game, I'm one of those that love to do everything the game has to offer. Take Final Fantasy X for example. You know that Monster Arena, where you had to collect all monsters 10 times, hehe, lets just say I only need to capture 1 more and I'll be done with the entire game. It unlocked many unique monsters which made it that much interesting, they are harder than the boss itself, and my customer made equipment from the rare items ownnnn! hehe
I never played Dark Cloud so I wouldn't really know. Have you tried Kingdom Hearts? I hate disney, so i refuse to play such crap, but from what I read, its still a good game, but i have that hatred towards disney

I have Dark Cloud 2. It's pretty good, alot like Kingdom Hearts in the fighting aspect. There's no turns, it's all real time. Plus, it's tougher than the recent crop of rpgs, I'm only 3-4 hours into the game and I've died about 3 times too. And the fact that the dungeons always generate randomly is cool, you never go into the same place twice. I like it. I like Xenosaga's story and setting better, but I guess it is set in the past. You kind of expect the main character to have a kool aid mustache and walk around barefoot.
Unfortunately I bought Zelda yesterday, so I'm trying to stick to my one rpg at a time rule, so I guess DC2's on hold...
I was thinking of trying Hack soon, but I don't know anyone who's played it. Hell, I'll probably buy it anyways.
Kingdom Hearts is a great game, I had that Disney bias too, but it was really fun. Geared towards kids with the characters, but it was still fun to play. And you get to fight Sephiroth and Cloud too, Cloud's kind of a puss but Sephiroth is ing hard. |

38 hours? Thats pretty weak... I was planning on going out and buying it asap since I just traded for a ps2 a few days ago, now maybe Ill just rent it. And the final boss is a joke, that sounds even worse...
Whats with easy ass rpg's these days? I remember BoF2 making me pull my hair out :D
Dunno.. maybe ill buy xenosaga. I never played gears, tho I want to. Think its worth it? |

nrjizer: while i agree with you that short games are annoying, some are still worth buying. xenosaga is one of them.
however if you havent played xenogears, i HIGHLY recommend getting it. its in one of my top 5 console rpgs ever (which is a difficult place to be ;)). its from back in the day, i believe 96... one of the earlier psx games. so, the graphics might make you cringe. think ff7 polygon characters, but slightly better, and you can rotate the view. honestly, the graphics alone almost made me stop playing it. but thank god i decided to keep at it.
the plot is hands down, THE best storyline of any game ive EVER played. (including pc games). most rpg fans will agree with me on that part. most rpg fans who have played it will also probably tell you its one of their favorite games. its THAT good.
second longest game ive ever played (ended around 90 something hours.. i took my time getting the best robots, etc). i only played it through once, and will do it again sometime soon to try to understand the story. the story is so complex, i dont think its possible for anyone to understand it the first time unless they read something online. they dont even explain most of the in the game until like the last 5-10 hours.
anyways, xenosaga is a prequel, one of a few games. so yea. PLEASE go buy xenogears if you havent.

hack is another one of those games that is VERY short (i beat it in around 20 hours, and i did take my time leveling, etc), but DEFINITELY worth buying. to be honest, i think this is one of the most innovative new ideas for a game that ive seen in a long time (and not easy to find in these days of cookie cutter rpgs).
i swear there was a thread on hack, but ill recap what i thought of the game:
dont know if youve seen teh anime, but the premise of the anime is that theres this huge mmorpg, and the main character finds this strange item... something weird happens, and then he cant logout. his body in the real world goes into a coma. in the game, he suddenly has these weird powers to hack the game gates (ways of jumping from world to world). anyways, i dont know if the anime was based on the game or vice versa, but the game is almost the same.. this time tho, its your friend who got suddenly went into a coma in real life.. and you cant find him in the game anymore. so you, and some other people you meet in the game are trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
the game is a simulated mmorpg, which i think they did WONDERFULLY. the first screen when you turn the game on looks like a computer desktop. you can read/respond to email, check on current news/events, etc. then you can turn on "the world". you can check an online bbs, which is VERY realistic. its kind of like a tutorial center, with "people" responding/asking questions. you also get information here on new areas to visit, etc.
once you are in "the world", its so realistic. the npc's act like mmorpg players, right down to what they say. some are annoying script kiddie types, lots of peopl euse smiley faces when they talk, etc. and they are on at different times in the day. so if you find people to play with you, sometimes they wont be logged on if you try to have them join.
short game, GREAT plot idea, great game in general. feel better in knowing that there are FOUR .hack games, each coming out about 3 months apart. the next one is due in early may... you can save your game once you beat it and any items, weapons, etc that you get with that save file, you bring to the next game. so i think its worth the money.
and if you are interested in the game, theres three anime series based off of it. the first i mentioned is called .hack//sign. 26 episodes, takes place before the game. its pretty boring tho, but great sound.
then .hack//liminality .. 4 parts, and you get one part with each game. follows the plot of the game
.hack - legend of the twilight bracelet ... still being subtitled, it takes place after the game.
jeez sorry for the long response, i just love my rpgs so much >_< |

wahhh xenosaga :) if i had a ps2, i'd be playin it. but instead i've been spending the last 2-3 weeks play xenogears.
sothis, have you beat alpha weltall (the part with the razael tree) before? it's quite a challenge with a bit of luck too. phew. you get a slayer's robe if you win with the trader's card equipped (a piece of armor ppl believe to only be obtainable via gameshark).
i also must say that xenogears is definitely one of the gems in the RPG genre. a gem that didn't get the exposure it deserved. but hopefully with xenosaga, ppl will go back and play xenogears. hehe.
the storyline in xenogears is crazzzzy. i've played through xenogears 3 times now, and i still find new things i didn't know about beforehand. it's a brilliant game. deals with so many issues and subjects like the "id" "ego" and "superego" or using religion to control the masses, etc etc. the list goes on....
if you haven't played xenogears, you must if you're an RPG fan. |

I haven't played Xenosaga but i've watched my friend play a little bit. To me i see a mix of 3 things: Metal Gear Solid, Xenogears, and a Movie.
I dont know anything about the story, but it didn't seem to have the xenogears feel like the original =P. Too bad square sold the rights to the next one made.
Also, I love Xenogears so much. But i lent it to this kid, and he never gave it back. I dont know how to reach him either, so it sucks. But anyway. Graphics are pretty much borderline SNES(except for the FMVs -- which are amazing). There is no 3d ness, besides the background(you can rotate in 90 degree intervals.) Nonetheless, GREAT game. I'll probably just borrow Xenosaga from my friend when hes done. |

| xenogears is one of the best games EVER. xenosaga doesnt hold a candle to it. youll probably have a hard time getting used to the inferior graphics, but my GOD its such an amazing game. |
