| quote: | The international spotlight on WMC has done more than its share in gaining credibility for the U.S. scene. Over the past couple of years, the States have surpassed the U.K. in terms of global import, if you ask DJ Dave Ralph, who was born and raised in England.
''Right now, America is the biggest and the best scene in the world,'' Ralph says on the phone from Boston, where he moved late last year after spending three years in Miami. ``As far as I'm concerned, England doesn't have much to talk about right now. And this is an expatriate saying this.
LONG GONE
''Gatecrasher's gone, Renaissance is gone, Cream's gone and Ministry of Sound is gone,'' says Ralph of the U.K. superclubs of the '90s. ``Two have closed their doors indefinitely and two have gone to occasional or monthly events.''
Ralph says that with the conference, America has become global savior of dance music.
``The Winter Music Conference started because it was about dance music, something special, and it became overcommercialized over the years -- which is fine. That's a good sign of success, but with that commerciality I think a lot of focus shifted away from the American market over to the European market.
``This year, the conference is gonna have to be about America. Because no one else has got anything to say.'' |
This was taken from a miami herald article about the WMC. There are always posts on here about the scene in the states and how much it sucks. I was surprised to hear someone from Europe say this. What do you guys think? |

What Dave Ralph said is very true. The United States is a very large market for any kind of music. A lot of Americans have just started listening to electronic music in recent years thus there is a lot of room for growth.
This brings up why Tiesto was touring the States constantly and received great fame in doing so. And I am sure a lot of people on this board were some how influenced by several of the big names in Trance, ie. Tiestio, PVD, Ferry, and Armin.
As for the WMC going commercial, I see it as a good way for a lot of new talent to be discovered. Also, it really helps promotion of upcoming tracks. As long as the quality of tracks don't go down, this "commericialization" is acceptable.
Electronic music is a universal language, it's a matter of time it will spread over the world, not just Europe and America, if it hasn't already. |

What they need to realise is that clublands vital signs are not dictated by how many superclubs are open.
It's been said hundreds of times before, we the clubbers are fed up with sky-high entry fees and the like, and are therefore turning to smaller more intimate clubs with a more personal atmosphere.
There are plenty of smaller clubs that are open and doing great, so WEEEEEEE!! :D
(besides, Ministry of Shyte is, well, shyte :p ) |

I think Dave Ralph should shut his big ing trap as from what I've read he is the one who is spouting .
I live in the UK and I can tell you the Uk scene isn't dead Gatecrasher is still alive so is Cream, Godskitchen, Passion and Slinky are still running well weekly with a host of other smaller clubs. his saying the occasional monthly event is complete bollocks too both have gone monthly not occasional and are more about big events as they felt their wasn't much money in being weekly.
If you ask me that whole ing article is a crock of ing and the stupid who wrote along with Dave Ralph should shut the up.
As Dark Tenshi put it correctly

Its not just one ing country. Yes Electronic music is strong in the UK, Holland, Germany, USA, Canada, Belgium, Israel, Japan and of course Spain if u count Ibiza. There is loads of countries which have scenes. |

| Dave Ralph is a sellout...he knows it. What does he know about the USA scene...the fact that he sits on his fatass in boston with his wife and waits for a promoter to pay him 20 G's USD to do a gig. I used to have respect for dave ralph when he was sorta oakenfold's number 2..he got a more bookings..then he soldout..moved to America....got married and has done nothing of note. |

| The US scene may be getting bigger but we still won't see stuff like Trance Energy or Sensation here...at least not for a long time. |
