| Ok im really bored and im at work so, I was thinking imagine a 1Gb/s Download speed, imagine you could download every trance track ever in like 20 minutes, or full movies in a split second. We can't be far of this, and im sure its only 25 years away. |

| 25 years!! doubi t, quicker than that. technology only get faster. the 2mb free trial connection on blueyonder are out for all the home users, adn big companies etc have alot faster ones. the only trouble, is your DLing ona 1GB line then the guy at the other end needs a upload ratio equal to taht for you to get full use, unless your mutlti threading on kazza off of 1024 1MB connections :P |

What you really want to ask for is media file compression. Though a 1Gig transfer on a home line sounds great, its currently not economical, and won't occur for a good good while, and it only sounds great because it "justfies" with todays large media size.
With advanced file compression, your current 1Mb download, would almost be comparible to a current 100Mbit pipe. For example, a 1 hour live set being 5 Mb, and a single mp3 being less than 1Mb, and a DVD movie rip being 15 Mb. This would completely utilize todays hard drive/processor compatibility, and we could literally double our drive sizes.
Keep in mind, with transfers of 1Gig on everyones home PC, it would require an entire new wave of hard drives, an entirely new advance in processing itself, etc. Which would just increase pricing. I say why not utilize what we have, (lets face it, hard drives are cheap now days), and make a 160GB HDD today, sound like a 320GB tomorrow. :D |

Well until BT decide they wanna spend billions on fibre obtic cables then downloads speeds wont go much over about the speeds we are seeing now.
They are still using the old copper pipes, which wont help much for the future.
So until they start laying some decent stuff we will not see speds increase that much :(
But tests are underway, and there r some pretty fast new technologies coming through that dont require cables :D |

| but if ntl ever get round to a 1gig service it will be pretty useless due to their crappy 1gig a day download limit |

what about Satelite connections , (SAL's) , how much data must you recieve through an arial to produce such picture quality ? |

from Leon-Garica & Widjaja "Communication Networks" (2000):
(p152) A satellite typicalls contains 12 to 20 transponders so it can handle a number of simultaneous transmissions. Each transponder typically handles about 50Mbps.

so that means: ~1Gbps
but note that this book thinks that iridium isn't deployed yet, so that figure may be higher currently. |

there is currently a test going on regarding some form of stupidly fast connection.. apparently it can receive data faster than a hard drive can write it.
so basically if we want stupidly fast connections, we have to develop faster hard drives to make it worth while :) |

| at those kind of speeds harddrives will never be able to cope as if they where to spin that fast they would overheat to quick, the future will be some new storage format with no moving parts |

hehe
we're all excited about highspeed but remember that we'll have larger files to download..=P
so we're only going to improve quality of the stuff we download |
