i need new tires for my car (2003 Jetta 1.8T) and having never owned a car with snow tires before, i am wondering if they might be worth investing in. i have a 25 mile commute to and from work, all city streets, lots of stop lights... and with Wisconsin winters being so unpredictable i am thinking i definitely need something with good traction and handling on snowy/icy roads. i've only ever had all-season tires on my cars, and the ones on my Accord were pretty terrible in the winter time - every time it snowed i felt like i was going to drift off the road at every turn.
granted, that's to be expected in that sort of weather, but do snow tires really make a difference, or should i just stick with good all seasons? |

Yes they do. There's no such thing as a "good all seasons tire". I don't know what kind of winters you get over there but having all seasons tires here is practically a suicide. |

Further evidence toward the hot chick/jetta theory.

they are pretty much stupid for any weather other than rain and summer weather. i even say them period and get tires made more for rain than all season. 2 sets of wheels = win. |

based on everyone's replies and the research i've read, that seems to be the general consensus. i'll probably end up getting some since it's going to cost me about the same, whether i get new winter tires & wheels, or new tires for my current wheels.
thanks guys! |
