I think there's a difference between popular and mainstream. Trance is popular - you can tell by the number of people at major trance events - but it's not mainstream, and I don't think it should be. Once something becomes mainstream it inevitably becomes part of the marketing-based force-fed "pop culture" we've all grown to hate.
Conclusion: Keep trance the way it is, we as a community are all "in the know" so we'll be fine. :) |

Hm, I don't know about the mainstream issue. Personally I wouldn't mind hearing more trance on the radio, if it only meant that people would grow to appreciate it.
As for the cheesing-up money-making, who knows? Trance (any electronica, even) is so unique that I don't know if you can "cheese it up" in the mainstream world enough. It seems to me that it would then just turn into Euro crap. But we already have that, so what's the worry? :p
Anyway my original point was not whether trance should be mainstream, but rather that there is a disappointing gap (rather, crevisse) between the popular trance events, attracting huge trance DJ's, and the regular clubs (the "underground" ones), which are pretty much devoid of trance at all. |

as Itika said, PvD's track was on the radio the other day and i'm quite disapointed actually. and yea.. i say keep trance the way it is. I swear if DannyD ever spin a "real" trance track (not a eurotrance bs that he calls trance) i'm so gonna.....grrrr, i dunno.. guys i need ideas to seek revenge. any help? :haha: |

Argg.. we've opened up an entirely different can of worms.. lol.
DJRocco, what you've said regarding Danny D got me thinking...
I've noticed lately that when I talk to people about music, and they ask me what I listen to, after I say "trance", I get one of the following replies:
1) "Ohh!! That's cool!! I also listened to trance before i got into [insert mainstream garbage]. I still remember ATB and Darude..they were cool."
2) "Nice! So do I - you ever heard of Scooter?"
... etc.
Basically, things along those lines. It's funny, 'cause every time my hopes rise when it seems like I've found someone who likes trance, and then they dash my hopes by plainly showing that they have no clue what the hell they're talking about.
It's disappointing that mainstream music/media has diluted the meaning/definition of trance (or, rather mutilated it) to the point that people confuse it with stuff like Scooter. :rolleyes:
Every time I talk to people like that, and they say how much they love their "trance", i think, "My God, if they only knew what Real Trance was....!"

That's why I think people need to be educated on trance. It wouldn't hurt to get more "real" trance exposure on radio.
But.. should a line be drawn? And where? Interesting questions.. interesting issue in general. |

I didn't quite pick up on that the first time, but I understand what you're saying now. It would be nice to have more trance at clubs regularly, but I think the problem is that very good trance DJ's seem to get very popular very fast, to the point where clubs can't afford them as residents. Except for the UK, where trance IS mainstream.
But I wouldn't wager money on that - it's just one possible reason why things are the way they are with trance. Personally it doesn't bother me, since I like the jungle/breaks/HHC/psy parties too. :p
In relation to "cheesing-up", I wasn't really referring so much to changing the music itself, so much as having it used as a marketing tool. Hearing trance music on an ad for AOL and seeing the next WEMF sponsored by Wal-Mart would just not be cool at all... |

radio is not a source of education. Radio is commercial and it's a money making tool. I think trance (and the scene) will be destroyed and we're gonna have a new genere called "commercial" trance.
U can't let the radio educate the ppl. It's our job to educate them. I mean think about it: would u rather have a teacher based on what will be a hit and sell more or someone who really apperciate the elements of trance and the culture?
Trance is more than just music, trance stands for alotta things! Freedom of expression is one of them. Our culture, it's very rare that u find a producer/DJ critisize another but rather help out each other and really care less about copyrights and focus more on things that matter.
As i said, trance is not only music, it's a culture. U can't teach a culture over a radio station. |

But seriously, having very good trance DJ's is one thing... but how about ye olde average trance dj? Where are those? I'm totally baffled... there are MORE clubs that play the stuff that is, IMO, less popular than trance, than clubs that play trance.
Maybe elitists of the lesser known genres equate trance with cheese? That's just another case of ignorance... :(
