One Night of Ecstasy Can Damage Brain
Drug Plays "Russian Roulette" With Brain Function
Sept. 26, 2002 -- "Just this once" sounds innocent enough but it could be too much when it comes to Ecstasy. Researchers say just one night of doing "X" can do a lifetime of brain damage.
Tests on primates show that two or three doses caused more neurological damage than previously thought, the kind of damage (to dopamine-carrying neurons) that can lead to a Parkinson's disease-like condition.
"Using Ecstasy is like playing Russian roulette with your brain function," Alan I. Leshner, former director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, says in a press release.
"This study shows that even very occasional use can have long-lasting effects on many different brain systems," says researcher George A. Ricaurte, MD, a neurologist with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "It sends an important message to young people -- don't experiment with your own brain."
The study appears in this week's issue of Science.
Researchers first gave five monkeys two or three doses of Ecstasy, or "MDMA," -- the amount young adults typically take during an all-night dance party. They saw a "profound loss" of dopamine neurons in all monkeys, including the animal that got only two MDMA doses.
Dopamine neurons control movement, emotional and cognitive responses, and the ability to feel pleasure.
To further test the effects on another species researchers gave baboons the same MDMA doses. The baboons that received two doses had dopamine neuron losses just as severe as those that got three doses. They also developed less severe, but significant, long-term reductions in serotonin-carrying neurons, which affect mood and behavior.
When dopamine neurons are damaged beyond a certain point, Parkinson's symptoms begin to appear, explains Ricaurte.
Previously, the occasional use of this drug was limited to college-age students. The increasing popularity of this drug among even younger people who take multiple doses more often puts them at a higher risk of damaging these nerve cells.
With rare exceptions, Ecstasy users have no obvious movement problems, Ricaurte says. However, because dopamine is known to decline naturally with age, Ecstasy users may be putting themselves at high risk for Parkinson's disease in later years.
Because there are no immediate, harmful effects, Ecstasy users think it's safe, he says.
"I'm amazed at the misperception about the risks associated with MDMA use," Ricaurte says. "People contemplating using MDMA should be aware that it can damage brain cells, and should recognize that its neurotoxic effects are likely to occur after doses that are commonly used in recreational settings."

'They're playing Russian roulette' - Fantasy drug takes first Kiwi life
An Auckland student is dead after what is believed to be the first fatal Fantasy overdose in New Zealand or Australia.
Shawn Jacob Brenner, 22, and his girlfriend, also in her 20s, were taken to Auckland Hospital on Friday night after being treated by police and ambulance staff at a Ponsonby house.
Mr Brenner, an engineering student and son of an Auckland gynaecologist, was declared brain-dead on Saturday afternoon. His girlfriend, who ambulance officers said had almost stopped breathing, was discharged from hospital after spending six hours on a ventilator.
Intensive care specialist Tony Smith said that when ambulance officers reached Mr Brenner his heart had stopped beating, and though they managed to get a heartbeat his brain had already been damaged. The drug had caused him to stop breathing, which caused his brain to die.
Auckland Hospital said three other people were admitted unconscious at the weekend after taking Fantasy, which has the scientific name gamma hydroxybutyric acid. Also known as liquid Ecstasy, GHB and GBH (grievous bodily harm), it can induce a coma, inhibit breathing and trigger seizures and vomiting.
The drug is sold in capsules, powder or liquid form for about $35 a dose. It induces euphoria and enhances sexual pleasure. It achieved notoriety in 1993 when it was identified as a drug that contributed to the death of Hollywood actor River Phoenix.
Dr Smith said the drug was becoming a huge problem in Auckland. "We've had five patients this weekend alone, either not breathing or breathing very poorly.
"This is the first death we've seen, but we are seeing patients every single weekend with GHB or Fantasy poisoning …"
Dr Smith said he was angry at "rumours" spread by "drug educators" that Fantasy could be taken safely when clearly it could not unless a trained resuscitator was nearby. "I'm under no illusion that people are going to suddenly stop taking this drug, but the are rolling the dice, they are playing Russian roulette."
Police said they were investigating the death, including the circumstances in which the drug was taken.

the reason ur seratonin + dopamine levels are ed is probably because u didnt look after ur brain before + after.. i.e. pre-loading vitamin C and post-loading vitamin C and 5HTP (and also cannabis has been proven to work well against post MDMA damage).. this way ur receptors dont get ed up with being flooded with dopamine when the pill stops working. this is the reason u get anxiety, because ur seratonin receptors are dead and cant receive the good stuff well enough.. :) basically the message is E is just like any other thing.. used in moderation, and doing sensible things to stop it damaging u, its fine..
and u can discount any animal tests with E.. they are dumb. even the ones on these apes posted by WuZaFuC, they dont represent the way its done sensibly.. they didnt give the apes vitamin C etc etc...
UK statistics on amounts of brain damage were taken from experiments done on mice using, in ratio to body mass, 20 times the dose that the average pill contains.. so of course thats gunna them up! |

There's a price to pay for every night out! Weather it be a hangover, or downer, the point of this thread - discuss that they're bad + not worth it!

This is easy dood.. relationships are very hard to keep up when they are so far apart.. and when you are seperated from the one you love.. of course its gonna feel like ... i felt like everytime i left my gf's house, cause she lived like on the other side of town...
|
Again not the point, any normal weekend where i didn't take anything i could get on that bus and feel fine, what i was saying is that due to the actions of the previous night i felt 100 times worse about things, which made the seperation a lot more difficult. So what i was sayin is that due to what i was taking i couldn't cope with other issues in my life. So i'm goin off them now either permanently or maybe just a few months, but i wanna return to normal ways of thinking for a while.

My isn't this interesting... stopping one thing and doing something else... you are worried about the effects of ecstacy, but sure why not get pissed drunk.. im sure that won't do anything...
|
Stopping one thing, doing something different?? No, stopping the Es. Just going back to the norm and consuming alcohol and no other illegal substances over the weekend. But we'll put that down to cultural differences :)
Ahh, I wish it were St. Patricks day once again. I love that day :) The only day of the year where it's 100% acceptable to be absolutly pished drunk in the center of the town at 3 o clock in the afternoon :)

nice try, but, WRONG! ^_^
i religiously used 5-htp, and always have taken multivitamins and such every day as it is.
i generally would take 1-2 5-htp the morning before, 1 once i completely came down, then id sleep, wake up, take 2 more once a day for a few days.
i did everything i should have done. yes, my seratonin receptors are probably ed up. however, who's to say that doesn't happen from regular use?
the problem with E is, no one really knows. i dont know, you dont know, and any random tranceaddict doesnt know. , even the doctors dont know. so everyone can speculate about "well, it wont hurt me! because i do A B and C", but really, theres so little we know about this drug, and thats what scares me, especially since im ed up now that i used the drug for so long.
unfortunately for E users, the research is showing more and more that this drug CAN cause permanent/long term damage... not the other way around (i dont remember seeing any news articles recently about doctors thinking E *DOESNT* do damage) |

10 pills in one night = drug abuse.
Drug use is about moderation, just like everything else in life. The catch is no one really knows what level of MDMA usage is safe... and there are arguments, experiments, and articles of all sorts, with countless conclusions and standpoints on the issue; so what is the truth? None of us can say... but personally, I have felt the negative long term effects of mdma usage, and also the short term effects it has had on close friends of mine and their lifestyles. My conclusion is that 10 pills in a weekend is ludicrous, I stick to doing it on special occasions only and haven't done it for 9 months now.
Take care people... |

Right, this thread has made my mind up, i'm goin off pills.
Sothis, you're the first person who claims to have damaged themselves in due to the effects of ecstacy.
by the way, what's this 5-htp thing? How you make it / where you get it?

| 5-HTP is a serotonin precursor, meaning it is the building block for serotonin. In the states it can be bought over the counter at drug stores, whereas in Australia it cannot (except for 1 or 2 states I believe) but can be imported. It is sold as an antidepressant, and used on a comedown (post-loading) it drastically reduces your scatteredness. People also 'pre-load' with 5-HTP to optimise the effects of the MDMA they plan to take. |

Well if i do ever decide to take them again i suppose i could get some of that stuff. Any where you can buy it on the internet? Or would it be possible to make it yourself?
I know, me sayin now that i'm goin off them ..next time i'm out + i'm in a good mood i know i'll prob go lookin for some. But I do want to go off them. I've tried before, but this time i really want to go off them. It's just not worth it anymore.
Maybe i'll just do it on special occasions like yourself..
