teaching a girl? (pg. 5)

I mean hey of course you can go to an event with a female DJ in the lineup just to stare at her body but I would class you as a complete retard if you paid money to get into the club just to watch her instead of paying money to dance and have fun :p

Do you know what a groupie is?

I think you have a fair bit to learn.

you guys are so right, many girl djs are using their "sex appeal" to get ahead...that's all good if all she wants is publicity.

me, i'm a girl dj and i have never flirted to get a gig and i don't use the fact i'm female as a replacement for talent...when i get really good eventually, i'm going to just focus on the music, same as now.

ever see what some of these girl djs are wearing to their gigs??? how come male djs don't come wearing little speedos or something? mmmm that could be nice for a change...haha!
Sharpy
lol. do people still actually wear speedoes? lol (besides pro swimmers)

Actually, it amazes me that there are so many sucessful male djs out there! I think that one huge thing that helps me dj is my ability to clean up on the dance floor. Not to brag, but most guys can't dance half as well as I can, but a good portion of women can dance fairly well, so it goes hand in hand that they would be able to transfer their knowledge to djing of what makes a good track and which good tracks are good dance tracks and which are not.
    pathetic... I actually find this to be quite conversely true, speaking only anecdotally. Percentagewise there is a lot more 'grinderz' out there that are chicks, but thats barely dancing, anyone can do it. most of the time, people that take dancing seriously (as a technical art) are men, although I am unsure why ;-) And just because you can 'dance' to music doesn't mean you know what makes it good. Thats like saying since you know how to drive a car, and how you like the ride to feel you could build a good one (or design a good race track). Analogy is flawed, but conveys the meaning properly :-D

I think there is no logical reason why gender makes any difference in the washout (or success) rate of djs except taht people are perpetuating stereotypes. Anecdotal evidence is not "a fact"..

Also, i fail to see any correlation between dancing and mixing records. Sure, they both require a fair amount of rythym, but almost every decent deejay cannot/does not dance, and every good dancer that jumps on the decks is crap.

maybe in the land down under m8.... not here, i've met many DJ's who dance quite well here in Canada. and a couple dancers who picked up spinning as a valid hobby and are quite good!

So not true, If you dont dance, you are not a good DJ, well mixing itself yes nothing to do with dancing, but you ever heard of a thing called track selection???? If you dont dance you dont know what songs are rythmic and what arent. Perfect example, my friend recently began to divulge in computer mixing just for s n giggles more so, but none the less he wanted my friends and i to listen to the mix. The track selection he picked out was not very good, flow was OK but not very rythmic, If a DJ doesnt dance, WTF is he doing lmao, how can you select tunes to get people moving if you yourself do not love to dance, I am sure a few DJs have the ear with out liking to dance but i dont know about you, but i see a lot of DJs hopping around or shaking a bit up there when they mix, i for one hate to see zombified DJs who stare at the mixer, making it look like just a job not a pashion. To an extent any one can learn to beatmatch, it is a skill that practice makes perfect, and perhaps you can get by merely by selecting tracks that all the big names drop, but when it comes down to it DJs are made by their record colections, and the DJ with those groovin rythmic white labels and promos is going to go a lot further than the Zombie with the crate full of yesterdays big hits and no emotion into their mixing. So OK you can make the point that mixing itself has nothing to do with dancing, but i for one feel that you at least have to somewhat enjoy dancing, or know damn well what people love to dance to if you are to be a successful DJ. I guess all in all it comes down to why the person is DJing, i do it because i love the music, i am addicted i cant get enough, and it lets me share my love, pashion and addiction with the world haha, i always have my head bobbing or something when i am playing with those EQ knobs haha. It just seems like DJs who are really big like to dance, there are always minorities, but those DJs who just stare at the mixer don't give ya the same feel as the ones hoppin around and loving every minute of mixing heh. Just my 2 centz
Sharpy
Are you saying that one cannot enjoy music if they're not dancing?
That's like saying I'm not a happy person because I'm not smiling.

AHA! So in making this statement you're not totally disagreeing with me.

Loving music, and ripping up the dancefloor aren't one in the same.

I can be in a state of pure fcuking bliss, but standing there motionless, stroking my chin.

Someone else can can be all over the dancefloor, and it wouldn't even matter to them if a 4/4 kickdrum was looping for 120mins.......they would still be dancing.

See the difference?

I know you might experience the best of both worlds, but you can't say that just because one doesn't get into dancing, then they don't know how to move a dancefloor filled with a thousand punters music-loving punters.

My point (for those who couldn't be bothered reading all that crap^^^): There is no direct correlation between dancing and crowd reading abilities.:thepirate

Sharpy has made some excellent points -- I'll try not to be redundant by repeating them.

DJDigDug, you're going to have to make up your mind in what you are trying to argue for. At the beginning of your post you said plainly, "If you don't dance you are not a good DJ" and yet at the end, the requirements for good DJ'ing are much less harsher. Not to be nitpicky, but consistency is good. :toothless

Now, I believe you have the right idea for sure, and I understand and agree with the basic premise of your argument -- you need to understand the "dancing spirit", or the dancing urge to be able to know what to spin.

I just disagree with the absurd proposition that you HAVE to be able to dance (and that implicitly means dance WELL) in order to be a GOOD dj. ;)

Why not? You should take advantage of the fact that the world revolves around money and sex... use sex appeal to your advantage! It's just a tool...

Because they would be branded as "gay". Yes, the world is imbalanced, but that's just how things are. Might as well capitalize on it -- see my above suggestion. :D

Female DJ's have the leg-up in almost every respect compared to male DJ's -- all that male DJ's can have is skill. The women can have skill AND good looks, and that increases their chances of success twofold. Hell, they can often have the latter but sorely lack the former, and still succeed to a certain degree. But I must say, most well-known female DJ's I am aware of are very skilled.
dknylady
hmm well you are right about how being an attractive female dj is a tool. but being an attractive female is a tool for almost every profession...
anyway i want to work really hard on my skills, and use them to get gigs, cuz i want respect. i want to be known as a good dj and not just a skinny blonde dj (ugh).

anywayyyy, heheh yeah i know djs will not start wearing speedos anytime soon. :(

i think that being able to dance really helps you choose your tracks. because if you have been dancing for a long time, like me, you get a feel for what kind of beat will keep the energy up, and the fact you need a break once in a while. you shouldn't have to dance to be a good dj, i just think it might help you understand what energy is needed from a track in order to dance.
i love dancing...i dance in my bedroom when i spin sometimes, but those damn headphones hold me back..:D
