since there is no forum for the edmonton (alberta, canada) area here on TA (yet?) i've decided to post this message here in the chillout room.

although i don't live there now, edmonton is my hometown and as such i've kept up with some of the news. there's been some activity regarding after hours parties in the edmonton area lately. there has been a strong effort from city politicians and police to shut down all after hours parties (raves and after hours clubs). the most recent development has been the creation of two new city by-laws:

1. IT WILL BE ILLEGAL FOR ANYONE UNDER THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN TO BE IN ANY PLACE WHERE DANCING TAKES PLACE AFTER MIDNIGHT

2. IT WILL BE ILLEGAL FOR ANY DANCING TO TAKE PLACE IN THE CITY OF EDMONTON AFTER 3 A.M.

i won't comment right now because i believe the obsurdity of these two by-laws speak for themselves. the news article can be found here .

this kind of thing has happened before in other areas of canada and around the world. the root cause is always the same: ignorance. a few questions for you TA's: what kind of actions can be taken to curtail this sort of thing? if it has happend in your area, how did you or people in your area react?

i know there's a few of you here, so for those of you in edmonton (or even if you're not), you can let edmonton's mayor bill smith know how you feel about this silliness here .

these are some harsh rules. but you know, I live in canada, and this matter can be settled by a law suit, which can cancel out those rules.

check the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, it must have a line like "people can do whatever they want" cuz how can u make a rule of "no dancing after 3am" thats like saying "no watching TV" those rules can overturned easily.

imagine no watching TV after midnight
HAHAHAHAHA :D

personally, I doubt thatll happen, but if it does, thats big news for me. That will affect buisness alot...cuz im a DJ(mostly for high schools) and if our dances cant go past 12, thatll suck ass in a huge way...but I dont think that it can happen..I live in cow town, not too far from edmonchuck..hopefully its not gonna happen..but if it does, all the AB parties r gonna be here....excellent....

hey i live in mootown too, and there was a city-bylaw in a effect since last august. i always found the alberta gov. intolerant, ignorant and snobby, to say the least

circumventions like this never happen in the 60s.

as for crime, it seems more frequent in etown than cowtown. The raves are a target for the criminal elements.

Thats the most retarded by-laws i ever heard.
well that and no spitting on the sidewalks in Kanata, (Ottawa).

it used to be illegal in the UK for any music with a repetetive dancable beat to be played after 12pm... and it also used to be illegal for a DJ to play this music with anyone dancing to it..

these stupid las were scrapped a long time ago when the government realised raves and stuff werent actually all that bad lol

peace

I chicago they are trying to implement this crazy law that a rave is considered to be happening, when there are a hundred people and there is a DJ spinning and those will be outlawed.

as i sed those laws have been scrapped now :) it was damn stupid... the government thought that raves were really really bad things and they also thought everyone was on drugs n stuff.. onhly some are on drugs... hehehe

i think any attempt to stop raves/parties likle these is a breach of the right to enjoy yourself. they should be fought at all costs, even when they are illegal keep on raving, thats what the early ravers in the UK did and now we can party legally :)

peace

wow...i read this thread title and thought...'uh-oh...' not another raver bashing thread. thank gawd it wasn't. :)

yeah the governments think CHANGE in general is a bad thing so most of em take the easy way out, by making new laws on the spot and because they have 'better' things to do. yeah right.
Gekhous
they r smoothing up the laws here :þ
