What part of Trance production kills you?

I've been playing around with tune production for a little while now. I've learned ALOT recently, especially plugin (vst synths) related.
Now i'm aware of all the soft synths around i've seen my main melody quality in my tunes shoot up ridiculously. Obviously i'm not saying im great at any part of producing but creating melodies is what i concerntrate on the most (when starting a new tune this is my starting point).
My main problem with producing tunes is where the tune kicks in. Drum beats are OK, melodies are not too bad (although this has nothing to do with tunes kicking in), but the point when the tune actually kicks off kills me (the synth that all tunes have at the beginning that really brings out the drums).
I don't see this asked anywhere else as everyone seems to worry about drums or main melody. This part really does my head in, maybe cos i havent seen any midi files focusing on this exact point.
I suppose a midi file (especially) or synth preset (general wave/envelope setting) would be hugely appreciated to just give me the inspiration that all the melody/bass/drum beat threads have provided.
Feel free to direct me other threads that have covered this topic if i've missed em :) |

Arrangement!!! :whip:
Cuz when I have arranged 30% of the song I've already grown tired of the song so can't finish it. :/ |

Interesting thread!
Im haunted by the same problem of Robstar, i think that having the ideia and to chase it is the fun part, and making the structure and arrangement is the boring part, i aways end up with another cool ideia in the middle of the process and abandon it to start that ideia.
Guess i (and Robstar too, lol) must try to focus more on the initial goal, hehe :toothless
About the tune kicking in, i had this same problem too, what u should do for now is forget this.
Make songs that already starts energetic like many out there, and keep on praticing it until u think u can do good.
Its more a matter of personal creativity and u can raise yours (worked for me) by listening to many songs to see how they do it, and writing down everithing. Then try to copy these ideias to exercise, and when u hav done that enough, new original ideias should just pop in your head automaticaly cuz u will hav aquired the right feel for what u could expect to hear when each of your track kicks in, depending on its feel.
The same exercise can be done to boost your melody composing skill.
Melody, arrangement, rhythm and structure are the worst parts of producing, for sure, cuz it dont matter how much technical knowledge u hav and the quality of your souds, these need creativity and feeling, and u can only aquire that by listening much music, with time and praticing, but not reading a super tutorial and messing with knobs... |

At the moment I'm struggling with breakdowns :( But, generally arrangement causes me problems too - getting the right flow to the track is something I can't do easily...
Anyway, conventional thinking on kicking in the tune has definitely changed. A few years ago everyone used to add more sounds and a crescendo snare roll. If you try this, sometimes the main tune doesn't kick in loud enough, so just add an extra measure / bar between the end of the snare roll and the tune kick in. You can hear this technique in many great tunes :)
Tracks now bring the tune in using different methods, for example, bring just the kick in alongside the melody, let that run for a bit, then add the bass and other elements for the full tune kick-in. As has been said already, just listen to some tracks and copy the ideas! |

| I have problems getting past the main ideas stage. I can get everything down fine and I know what to do, but once i get the main structure down, i just sit there and listen to it till I get sick of it, then I move onto something else. It's good when my mate comes around and we do it together cos then I actually do what needs to be done. |

| ussualy the hardest part for me is how to connect the different parts of a tune so they would flow well. |
