Computer Help.... (Freezing Problems)
View this Thread in Original format

The past two days Ive been having trouble with my computer and wanted to know if its something simple that can be fixed quickly.

My computers been going really choppy when I open a program, minimize a program or maxamize a program, or even when im runing winamp the computer kinda freezes for a secend and whatevers in winamp starts going choppy. What could be doing this?

I installed a third hard drive the other day, and when windows started acting up I pulled it out... So I dont know what the problem could be.

Heres what my system is.

Windows XP
1.00 GHZ AMD Atholon Processor
512 MB of Ram
7.86 Hard Drive & a 28 Gig

So wtf.

For anyone with computer experience please help me out.

man, that sounds exactly what's been happening with my pc, only i have 256 RAM and a 500 MHz AMD k6-2

i found that right-clicking on the desktop, choosing properties, clicking on the effects tab, and unchecking the "use transition effects on menus" sped up my compie for a while, but now it's back to being retarded... i don't know what's wrong...

i'm guessing it's the fact that my cpu fan is working crappy, so the cpu gets overheated plus my main hard drive is clogged up beyond belief (plus it's 5400 rpm)... but your case is different

try defragmenting, that might help

i want to see other people's solutions to this, because as of now, i'm planning on getting a newer pc with at least 512 ram & 2+ GHz chip

If you have Windows XP, and that situation dont happen under another USER NAME, I would recommend you to reset your user/account settings. That samething happened to me a bunch of times. Something similar happened to my computer, but for me everytime windows was starting, or as I proceede to open my internet connection, or as you said Winamp or just the first program that I opened it freezed to hell.. until I reseted my user account and it worked.

have u try opening the pc case ?

run adaware to kill adwares/spywares/resource hogs
run msconfig to disable some useless program at startup to free up some memomry
run services.msc to disable more useless services that take up more memory, if u need to know what to disable go here http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and downlaod the safe config get this file http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Fil...ProAllstart.zip then open it, say yes and restart

i do these and made my pc to load nothing on the startup and fast

1. make sure u have enough empty space for the os (cause it needs to write a large temp file).
2. run disk defrag.
3. scan using the latest antivirus.

If all else fails reformat and reinstall the os. This is a pain but guaranteed to work.

Slower-than normal speeds are 99% of the time due to one or more of these things:

1) A virus
2) An extremely fragmented drive
3) A large amount of software running at once, most of it unnecessary
4) Not enough space on your drive for virtual memory

solution: get a new computer. at least one my grandmother doesnt use like that one.

Heres another possible problem that was making me wanna throw the box out of the window (only 30 Gigs of trance on the HD prevented me from doing that :D). I havent noticed it since i installe SP1 though.

goto --->control panel ---> system ---> hardware ---> device manager ---> IDE ATA/ATAPI controlers

Check all IDE chanels if they work in DMA or PIO mode. If they say DMA this is not the case, if it says PIO mode heres what you do.

Select all IDE channels (there sould be 2 unless you ahve an extra IDE card in your system) and click unnistal. There sould also be another entry thaere that says master IDE controler. Leave that one alone :) Anyway after unninstalling the IDE channels the compuer will say it needs to restart. Let it. When it enters windows the system willinstall new drivers for the IDE channels. After another restart both you IDe channels should be running in IDE mode and everything should be ok :)

A few general tips for future situations.

- Defragment your HD on a regular basis, especialy if you are uising the FAT32 filesystem. As it is just a patch of the old DOS filesystem it creates a giant mess on the computer, with partyof files scatterred all over the place. Convert the HHD to NTFS for better performance.

- Use scandisk once in a while. Party of the HD can become damaged sometimes and most of the times data can be written on them, but when they try to read it the computer usualy freezes. Scandisk can recognise these bad sectors and mark them so that windows ignores them and only uses the "healthy" part of the disk ( i had 15gb of bad sectors on my 20GB HD 2 years ago becouse i loaned it to a friend of mine, he put it in his school bag and then he forgot that he had it in and kept throwing the damn thing aroung the school all day :))

- Open up your box once in a while to dust it. Dust abstructs the air flow through the box and in that the cooling proces is greatly reduced. When ive worked in the repair shop many people broght me a pc that didnt work or was wery laggy and then i saw that the CPU was fried and it was overlayedwith a few cm of dust) BTW to helpthe cooling proces it may also help to get round IDE cables. THey are not expensive, but the air flow is way better.

- Check the fans on the CPU, graphic cards, the power thingie (cant remember how its called :) the thing htat you plug the power cable in :D) Broken fans (not nececery that they stop woirking entirely, just a slowdown will suffice) means overheating which with CPUs means lagging, whilest the power thingie (i really like this word thingie...souds so...cool :D)can have probles delivering power to the box (if your computer ever restarted for no obvious reason this is it)

I higly doubt that u ahve a virus, as i had the exact same simotoms a while ago and i solved it with the method described above. If you ahvent yet, then install the latest service pack. I dont know if it completely solves the problem, i havent noticed in in a few months. Hope this post had helped and i didnt just waste a few minutes while typing usseles stuff that everybody knows, while i could be somewhere partying right now as it is 3.13 am :) (no trance parties tonight though :nervous: )

CPUs with clock speeds of 1.00GHz or below are considered to be ancient for todays standards. Get a new one, (you won't believe how cheap they can get) or downgrade to win98

The processors out today are unbelievable. Pentium 4, 2.6CGHz with hyper threading technology enabled, combined with the right motherboard (preferrably a P4p800, intel 865 chipset) and DDR memory can do absolute wonders. I did some heavy research, and I too, am planning to get rid of my ancient PC, and replace it with a new one.

You can build a complete, top-of-the-line system for less than 1,200 US dollars (if you knew where to look that is).

I had the exact same problem.

turns out, it was because i have a sister. I recomend anyone with one of these, do get rid of theres as soon as possible. They serve no productive purpose, but more to annoy, and bother you.
i have to format my computer because she used it just once.

Ahhh. Some great advice for this common problem in this set.

The advice that worked was Moongoose's advice. Thanks man I apreciate it much. Worked like a charm. Figures that it was the PIO mode that was causing the trouble.. I never even thought of that. Thanks again.
