help! fear of heights

I've always had this thing with heights, whenever I find myself in a situation which involves even the smallest height something happens to me which I cant expain, it's like I freeze and I cant control my body and that I'm gonna be pulled down for some reason. I never had a big problem with this, many people have fears so I accepted that this was mine but now it's getting very annoying, all my friends are doing different fun activities which I cant do because they involve heights so I am doomed to just watching :( it's something that I cant control and I am very frustrated about it. I was thinking of visiting a pshycologist or something to help me get rip of my fear of heights or atleast help me deal with it. Has anyone else ever had such a serious problem with heights? I'd like to know how you handled the matter and if visiting a pshycologist would work, thanx :)

P.S. - to those of you who will say 'dont look down' it doesnt work :P

get HAMMERED. You dont NEED a frontal lobe to function. Alcohol serves that purpose temporarily. Maybe itll rewire some stuff in the process. If it doesnt work...you still got hammered.

its a win win solution.

PS. try this many times until it works.

You know, unlike everyone else, I'll answer this question as seriously as I can, because I used to have the same problem. If I was so much as at the top of a 6 foot step ladder, I would freeze, and not want to move. I usually had to verbally talk myself into moving again so that I could come down.

Please not that I say I USED to have this same problem. What I used to do is going to sound sort of weird here, so bear with me. First of all, get yourself into an environment where you natually feel safe...such as your home :) Now, climb up on your kitchen table and stand up. (LoL Told you it would sound weird, but I'm serious) Start walking around on the table, and even get yourself right to the very edge of the table, and force yourself to look down. (If you have the same sort of fear that I once had, this will be much more intense than it sounds) Keep doing this until it gets to the point where you feel completely comfortable doing this. From here, it is up to you as to how you progress. I will only be able to tell you what I did in my particular situation. I was able to find a friend of mine that understood my situation, and wasn't going make fun of me, or try to force me into anything. The next thing that we did was climb a ladder and walk around on his room for awhile. We talked about everyday , while we were doing this...anything EXCEPT the fact that we were 22 feet off the ground. After awhile, I'd start walking to the edge of the roof, and start looking down. All the while, my friend was right next to me....this is where the trust issue comes in. After several different roofs and other ledges, I actually progressed to rock climbing. Not the kind you see in a mall, but 100% real rock climbing, in the deserts of Nevada. This particular face that I climbed was about 115 feet. Once again...its all about the trust. You have to 100% trust that your friend is NOT doing to do anything to scare you while you're scaling the face...and trust that if something WERE to go wrong, he is going to be right there to help you and lower you down. I was able to scale the entire height of the rock face on my first attempt. There were several times, however when I had to stop and, once again, talk outloud to myself and get myself calmed down and not panic. From here, I took it one step farther, and decided that I was going Bungy Jumping. I did this on the same weekend that I rock climbed. This was in Las Vegas, Nevada. 173 Feet. The highest permanent bungy platform in America. I explained my situation to the jumpmaster (the guy that ties you in, and walks you to the edge, and all that good stuff) He was great about it. He explained every single little step of the process and what he was doing. He took me slowly out to the edge, never letting go of my harnessing. He let me take my time, and talk to myself to get my head in the game. From there, it just boiled down to the fact that the hardest part is letting go. Now that I've bungied, I can honestly say that I have almost completely overcome my fear of heights. I say almost, because I think that I never will be COMPLETELY "cured" of it. There are times when I'll be at work and running network cables along a rafter, or something as such, and I'll feel the panic start to creep back in. The trick is knowing how to control the panic, and ultimately, overcome it. Good Luck! Keep us posted!

i forgot the technique but i believe its submersion(sp?). Anyway start your self off but standing on the first step of a ladder the step of and on for a few days or weeks. then move on to the second step and go up and down dont exceed the step. continue you doing this for a few months and hopefully it will have helped you..... or if your in realy good health and feel like taking a chance go skydiving and have sonmeone push you out of a plane.....either you will die of shock/ be cured....or just somewhat be cured.....

DJ_NRG I appreciate you taking the time to write that post for me, it looks like a great idea btw, maybe I should start doing the same but I dont know if I could convince a friend into this, maybe I should try it alone.

DJ_NRG very wise post.

I have fear of hights as well but not as bad as i did before, the trick that got me to it was slowly pushing yr self and understanding the problem truying 2 calm down and take control of the situation.

I'm stil afraid to stand near the edge of say 5 storey buildings as im scared the wind wil change and woopieeeee splat. So i creep up to the edge by crawling to it and that way you know for sure that nothing can push you off. So if pushing yr self and taking a step at a time byt creeping up on it should be a good go as wel.

I think my fear started as when i lived in europe the place i was born, it was a 10 storey building, and i have sein afew people who have fell from the top stores, kids and elderly so i was just having a fear to end up like them.

So try understand why exactly you are afraid, and why you think theres a danger and exactly of what then comes the step part :)

Sorry if it sounds confusing but i hope it helped you a tiny bit at least knowing ure not the only one.
