I used to work in a produce department in a supermarket, one day when I was putting Grapes on the shelf (I'm pretty sure that they were from Mexico) I felt something on my arm. I looked and saw this crazy looking spider on my arm. I didn't really want to move, because I was afraid that it was gonna bite me. I got lucky and one of the guys that I worked with walked by and I called him over and he knocked it off my arm for me.

in a, i work in a grocery store... in a!!! i'm getting paranoid about this...

and the other day someone posted a story about a brown recluse spider on fark.com... let me tell you, that freaked me out... brown recluse spiders are ing horrible, i'm develeoping arachnophobia, i tell you...
Inertia

The feature that most distinguishes the brown recluse from many other harmless spiders is a somewhat darker violin-shaped marking on top of the leg-bearing section of the body. The neck of the violin "silhouette" points towards the rear (abdomen) of the spider.

Bite Symptoms
The severity of a person's reaction to the bite depends on the amount of venom injected and individual sensitivity to it. Bite effects may be nothing at all, immediate or delayed. Some may not be aware of the bite for 2 to 8 hours, whereas others feel a stinging sensation usually followed by intense pain if there is a severe reaction. A small white blister usually rises at the bite site surrounded by a large congested and swollen area. Within 24 to 36 hours, a systemic reaction may occur with the victim characterized by restlessness, fever, chills, nausea, weakness and joint pain. The affected area enlarges, becomes inflamed and the tissue is hard to the touch. The spider's venom contains an enzyme that destroys cell membranes in the wound area with affected tissue gradually sloughing away, exposing underlying tissues. Within 24 hours, the bite site can erupt into a "volcano lesion" (a hole in the flesh due to damaged, gangrenous tissue).

The open wound may range from the size of an adult's thumbnail to the span of a hand. The sunken, ulcerating sore may heal slowly up to 6 to 8 weeks. Full recovery may take several months and scarring may remain. Plastic surgery and skin grafts are sometimes required.

Browns have been a pain in my arse throughout my life. They're a real problem here in the Midwest. I've been bitten by one of these ******s back in high school in the leg. At first I thought it was in ingrown hair, but the redness and swelling kept getting bigger and bigger around the sore mark. After about 3-4 days it finally got so bad that I could barely move my leg, so I went to see a doctor who gave me some meds of some sort. Within a couple of days the swelling went down and the pain disappeared. Then I finally pinched it off like popping a zit, and out came a small little black ball - which I assume was the poison ball or something. Sorry, I know that last part was a tad bit gross. Pretty cool as a kid seeing that come out of your leg though.

Unfortunately, we have a problem with them where we live right now. Turns out our neighbors are trash, and their house is infested, which has spilled over into ours. I've killed 6 good-sized Browns in the past 2 weeks - one was up in our frickin' bedroom!

Couple of words to the wise - pick up your . Don't leave piles of cloths or papers around - they consider this a lovely breeding nest. They also create false webs above in corners and sides of walls - they do NOT live in these webs. Their webbing fluid is a little different than regular house spiders - it's somewhat more clothy and fiberish, if that makes any sense. Also, clean out your closet and check inside old shoes that you haven't worn for a while - again, great nests for these little ******s. Finally, you likely won't know if you've been bitten right away - their fangs are very small and the sensation of being bitten usually goes unnoticed until a small swollen red mark appears within 12-24 hours.

That should keep your skin crawling for awhile.

P.S. - little tidbit of info.: did you know that Daddy Long Leg Spiders have some of the most toxic venom known? More toxic than the Black Widow. However, their fangs are so small that they cannot penetrate the skin of humans. But oh if they did......

Oh yeah, and spraying for these little s doesn't do much good. Estimates from a buddy of mine who's an exterminator puts it at a kill rate of approximately only 35-50% when you get your house sprayed. The reason being is the poison doesn't reach their bodies, since they are well elevated off the ground with their legs.

That really sucks.

as for not killing spiders... it is bad luck to kill them. my mother always told me that and you know mom is always right. ;)

Here's how I kill spiders: I go into the kitchen drawer and get a bunch of those big thick elastic bands, and shoot them at the spider. Eventually, one of them hits the sucker and SPLAT (either that, or it gets its head, thorax, or abdomen lopped off - usually the latter if the spider is bigger).

Don't think of it so much as being "gone", think of it more like "danging above your face while you're sleeping"*.
