Yup, the US has never had an official language and nor should it. I'm inclined to agree with the ACLU's stance on the matter. The nation was founded as a multilingual nation when in the 1700s the main languages were predominantly Dutch, German, French, English, etc. Efforts to make english the official language since the 1700s have continually been repudiated as being undemocratic.
Personally, I like the fact that if you go to chinatown in any major city the street signs are in chinese, stores are all chinese, everything is chinese. Since the US has virtually no cultural history of the likes that Europe has, I think we should embrace our cultural diversity and encourage the factors that make our country a "melting pot." It's not like the english language is ever going to die out as a primary platform of communication so us monolinguists have nothing to worry about. Therefore most who would advocate a national language are simply xenophobic towards other cultures, and typically wish to impress their way of life upon others.
This issue irritates the hell out of my girlfriend who majored in bilingual education but can't teach in several states because they passed laws against bilingual education. What's one of those states? Liberal California!!! Thank God that the DC, MD, VA area is enlightened enough to realize that having multilingual citizens is a good thing! |
