| when i meet new people and aventually they ask what type of music i listen to, i always tell them trance. of course they dont know what trance is, so i always end up telling them techno. and then i emphicize that i listen to trance not techno. but they always ask me what the difference is. i can tell the difference myself when i listen to songs, but i am having trouble putting it into words. can anybody help? |

| Just tell them you listen to electronic dance music. I'm sure they will understand that. |

| i would say trance is more melody drivin while techno is more bassline drivin, however the bassline is harder and "machine-like" compared to the groovy, flowing basslines of house music |

| id definately have to say techno, as i deem trance of the last year or so to be most unimpressive :) |

Don't say techno because this word was raped anyway so people think that all that cheesy stuff is techno.
I always say that I listen to electronic music. |

i think machine like is a good description for techno. but it isnt necessarily harder. techno can be minimal or hard or funky... mostly, it has a rolling bassline that is generally a higher bpm than house music overlaid with techy sorts of sounds. trance is definitely unique in edm because it is mostly melody driven with the synths and overtones. |

You could tell 'em that trance is dance music with classical influences, more detailed, angelic vocals, maybe a bit gothy.
OR you could refer to my answer in an earlier thread:
| quote: | ....Naw, you gotta keep it simple for the simple people:
Techno = fast disco made of machine noises/sneezes/whatever and a bunch of angry guys stomping the floor
Trance = a broken washing machine and 40 accordions in a big echo-y cave
"But why do you listen to that ??"
I dunno. :D
