| are we discussing French-french Ahlamalek? or Quebecois-french? only in Quebec do the Stop signs read in French, in France they say 'stop'. Just cause you all say courriel, doesnt mean the large majority of internet using French do| |

Actually, a large majority of the Francophone world that uses the internet says "courriel".

actually you just pointed out a big problem that French from France have admitted. They really love using English words and the French officials over there don't know wo which saint they should pray :p
they use for example
Parking = stationnement
Escalator = escalier roulant
and many other, they think its cool to use English words :rolleyes:
actually for your personnal culture STOP comes from a French word that was borrowed from the English about 300 to 400 years ago. The English heavily used this word and now everyone believes its originally English. This is funny because some French people who bitch after that Stop sign are dismayed when they learn that the word is originally french. :D |

Huh? English is littered with French, German, practically words from every romanced based language. It has to be the most mutt language out there ... nobody really cares. |

The most pathetic thing is how ridiculously anal France has been in "cleansing" its language of "foreign" words. L'Academie Francaise has performed this pathetic, unnatural task for a long time, in an attempt to keep the French language "pure." Even many French people, especially the younger generation, laugh at this ultra-conservative and unnatural practice. "E-mail" and "ordinateur" (computer) are not the only examples. The larger issue is the French arrogance toward people and cultures to which they look down, condescendingly, as if something about French culture makes it "higher" than others; as for the language issue at hand, yes I am a linguist, and if you ask any linguist (s)he will confirm that all attempts to "purify" a language are language are ludicrous and doomed. The Russians tried to do it in the 1910's, thinking that keeping the language "pure" from foreign influences was a noble goal. They couldn't have been more wrong.
If we put this in the larger context of French arrogance, we arrive at the conclusion that the French are living in the past, with visions of past glory clouding their reality that in modern times France is NOT a power that anybody takes very seriously. Just consider the value (or lack thereof) of the franc in the 1990's. Look at the French economy, look at how many people are not connected to the internet there. Sure, the "internet" is an Anglo-American term and phenomenon :rolleyes:
I am not a Francophobe -- in fact I'm fluent in French and I'm well familiar with French culture and history -- I'm just stating the facts. And when something is pathetic, I'm not afraid to say that, metaphorically speaking, the king has no clothes on. |

English vocabulary is unique because it has "borrowed" words from almost every language. Don't expect every language to behave the same.:rolleyes:
I know a third language, which is Arabic, and that language has words for computer, television and radio for example. All of these weren't invented by Arabs. I am sure that there's many other languages that have their own words describing things.

thats true, and there's nothing wrong with it. But once a country starts banning a word, in my opinion, thats going overboard. i think france is the only country i know of that would do something like that. |
