Yea, I don't think the issue at hand is that the French have strong roots to the origins of their language. So what if the French converted terms for what originated as English terminology? What I think makes this issue laughable, is that this French commission is directly seeking to avert the natural evolution of a language. Not only are they creating french terminology for widely known and adopted English terms, they are banning the use of the english terminology from all publications, news reports, etc. I think that every French person knows and recognizes what the term e-mail is in reference to, so why take proactive efforts to phase out the use of the term? It seems slightly arrogant, and one gets the idea that the sole purpose of this commission is to avoid "contamination" of French culture and language from outside influences. |

btw since we're on the subject of languages, which one do you guys think sounds the best? in my opinion its italian, then french. i wish i knew how to speak one of them.... you know to impress the 'ladies' :toocool: |

guys you got it wrong, no one can ever ban a word, any word! what the French govt did, is deciding that in its official paperwork "courriel" will be THE word describing emails in english. I don't see whats all the fuss about, its common practice in govts all around the word.
its like saying: guys lets call this like that from now on, okay?! |

i dont know... to me banning seems like such strong langauge, its as if someone is going to get his ass busted if he uses the word e-mail. i dont know of any other countries that ban words, they usually just say that "the official word used for '' well be 'crap' from this day forth".... :tongue2 |

well yeah, an employer (govt) can ask his employees (public workers)to restrict themselves to one word instead of many in their work. its very common in the private sector too.
i still don't see whats all the fuss about, maybe because i work at the govt. hehehe |

Hmmmm so why not declare the offical word to describe emails as emails hehe? I dunno, the establishment of a specific institution to prevent an anglophone invasion of the French language seems a bit overboard.

I think International English is more appropriate, because a the USA is *the only* country to spell colour without the 'u' (and pronounce foyer funny ways lol)
whatever, I'm not being serious here. I really don't know why the USA decided to flip a bunch of spellings around. I can't tell you if it was to build 'American identity' or what.
regarding the French word for email... to each his own. We (Canadians) are used to the French trying to protect their culture. I say, power to them. American culture is everywhere, I think its good they are trying to maintain a unique language. Language is the most important aspect of culture. |

Well pronunciation was probably as a result of the mix of different accents and tongues during the period of America's mass immigration. However, with respect to color, theater, center, etc., I actually know the reason why the u was dropped. One may thank Noah Webster's dictionary of 1828 for that. He had his own ideas about American spelling and believed in careful enunciation of each syllable in a word. Sec-ret-ary instead of secretr'y for example. His dictionary was adopted by much of America at the time and the spellings and pronunciations took root. Not quite a government edict to change the word colour to color to preserve culture. But then again, America didn't really have its own culture at the time so to speak. |
