| How do you guys think I felt when they started playing "New music..you heard it first on 106.7 KDL...Paul van Dyk - Nothing but you" I almost started crying!!! I can hear it 20 million times and still love it, but other people are going to grow to hate it as much as sandstorm. I hope no other pvd tracks get screwed through radio :crazy: . yes, dave's works might be intended to reach as most people as possible and bring them as much pleasure as they can handle, but that's not what the station is about and that's the problem. now, i've never listened to KTU, but i'm familiar with this type of radio play. i understand that radio stations of course want to "play the biggest hits of today" and what-not and that it's exactly what people want to hear, but IMHO that's very bland.
in boston we have this "classic soft rock" station 106.7 which plays stuff like dido, sarah mclachan, EBTG, etc. love songs and what-not. now, for 4 years they've been playing the same music ALL OVER AGAIN. i don't really listen to them, but whenever i do (and it's always playing in the laundromat i do my laundry in), i hear the same stuff and my mom too says it's annoying.
the perfect type of radio station IMHO would be about bringing music to people, new music, new talent, but also not forgetting the classics. and maybe there would be like a top 10 every night so that you could hear the tunes you like very much. crap, i lost my point.
anyway, don't forget that radios can be as commercial as music / cds. because the better the station's ratings are, the more money they can get from ads / whatever.
in any case, also remember that somewhere out there there's several poor little lost minds who DO like what KTU plays and who think it's COOL. so it's not all about us, is it?

Please do not get me wrong...i love ATRC and 99.9% of everyother production you are involved in...so i want to make that clear.
But the audience that listens to KTU here in NY and NJ "will not" be turned by "ANY" track..no matter how good it is....I know these type of people and they are unredeemable. Radio kills good tunes, noone can deny that. Yes the artist tends to come out on top, but at what cost? You don't hear much of Zombie Nation, or MARRS anymore...those 2 probally had the most plays of any other eletro song in history...yet seemed more liek that killed them...too much of a good thing tends to be a bad thing.
If i have an elitist attitude so be it, but i think it more of the fact that i don't want good music ruined...which in the end 90% of original ATRC fans will be bored and disgusted of the track after being FORCE fed it on the radio a million times a day.

i don't understand what's to be lost by this song being played on the radio. if you like this song you should be happy for it's success. if it gets played out by that station, will it change the fact that you like it? i don't understand where the idea that the value of a song diminishes because it gets played comes from, but it's pervasive and illogical.
this song could be a segue to the creation of a dance radio station for all you know, it could expose so many people to a beautiful genre of music that they haven't heard before. i can't think of a better song for trance music to put on the radio than atrc.
you make an enormously unintelligent generalization by stereotyping people that listen to beyonce, jay-z, britney or whatever else as moronic sheep. surprise! i listened to a lot of that before i was exposed to trance because all i had heard was dj sammy and ian van dahl nonsense. here's another surprise: i STILL listen to it on occasion! why wouldn't you want people to hear GOOD trance?
does a song have to be (and remain) underground as a secret among established trance lovers for it to be good? the center of your argument sounds like this to me: if the general population hears a good trance song, that song has less value. it's like saying only people who can appreciate shakespeare, fitzgerald or hemingway should be allowed to read it. there is no harm in putting a song out for exposure among a non-trance crowd. so what if they decide they hate it? i'll still love it, just like i did before it was put on a radio station.
as far as andain "selling out," josh gabriel told me on saturday that the group was trying to decide where it would go, in the dance direction or elsewhere, and asked my opinion. personally, i would love to see andain go more dancey, but even more i would love to see them be successful -- whatever route leads them there.
last thing: i'm exasperated with everyone crying that a group or artist has sold out just because they've become successful. i would love to see more people appreciate trance, and the only way to do that is through exposure.

Simple, we are all a bunch of jaded s who don't want to see our scene corrupted by American Corporate Labels. KTU is just a step under, it is a direction in which many of us do not want to see dance music go. Yes we want our artists to be successful and for the scene to grow, but NOT that way.
Sorry our (the jaded s) opinion will not change, we appreciate quality music outside the rhealm of dance. We do not consider what KTU plays good music and do not want to see what we consider good music played alongside stupid bull.

AGREED!!!!
Look at history...it will show you time and time again what happens to a genre that gets embraced by the manistream, corporate mongrals....history has proven that NOTHING good comes to a particular form of music once it has become "pop"...look what happened to the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Iio, Limp Bizket, etc etc...in all genres the masses ruin it...it never fails....
Granted money is made...but if you actually beleive that trance moving very mainstream will gain better fans and move forward then you are sadley mistaken.....you will eventually have more producers and DJs jump on the bandwagon making and spinning junk tracks because they will be forced to produce many tracks by their labels to compete with the other artists...and what happens when things are rushed and quality is taken over by quanity?...absolute garbage....you can see this happening in trance for about the past year with the lack of quality tracks being produced...trance as already started its downfall...that is of course until maninstream gets bored of it and a new rap sensation jumps on the scene for them to embrace and go back to calling trance fairy queer music....
Call me selfish...but i say keep it underground, away from "AMERICAN" radio...but hey thats my opnion...sorry if you feel different. |

btw i think its realllllllllly funny how like 50% of the people in this thread are bitching about how ATRC is now mainstream cuz it was played on KTU, yet in other threads they gripe about how the song is so old and overplayed. pick your battles!! |
