Intelligent Drum and Bass
View this Thread in Original format

I work at a club called Spy, here in Cincinnati where there is mostly trance, progressive, and some house played. Recently we had a Intelligent Drum and Bass Dj spin on Sunday's. Got to admit alot of it was real chill, I liked it. Problem is I dont know what is good and what is bad. If anyone else out there is a fan of the genre or just knows who is good let me know some good tracks or DJ's to look out for. I did a search and could not find a similar thread. thanks in advance.

anything on the Good Looking Records label is an easy and sure fire start.. fronted by the one and only LTJ Bukem. he's one of the pioneers of jazzy/intelligent d&b and no doubt the most famous for it.

also check out one of my tunes =) here; liquidesque drum&bass with a dashing of trance..

enjoy.

i like that track a lot. that is the kind of stuff i am looking for. I saw that LTJ Bukem cd with that conrad guy MCing and I thought it might be dumb because of him. My friend listens to D'n'B and he loves that MC stuff, but i hate when the guy talks though the song. So i just guessed that the CD would sound like that. Any CD or track recommendations?

what makes "intelligent drum and base" intelligent?

Drum'n'bass with a jazzy flavour (or just with some atmosphere, I suppose)... also known as Jazzstep and maybe Atmospheric drum'n'bass, depending on your judgement.

Don't mind the word "intelligent", it's just a pretentious word as "progressive" :D j/k, even though I find it a bit arrogant to use those words to define a genre.

ahh the jazz makes it intelligent :D

nah i don't really care what people call it. i didn't think progressive would have a pretentious conotation. i always thought of it as progressive becaue it was always slow and built up to a break down. or built up to a huge track at the end of a set.

Not really, it's "progressive" because it borrows elements from other genres (which is quite what happens to every genre: either elements are borrowed or things slightly evolve :p). That's why progressive house (which borrows tranzy elements) and progressive trance (which borrows housey elements) have progressively become the same proggy thing :D

i think the "intelligent" part refers to how the music is not formulaic. like in trance with the 4/4 structure, you know when something is going to happen. but intelligent dance music just has a mind of it's own, and alot of the time it's really ed up (sometimes in a good way, sometimes just ed up). hmm, did that make any sense?

thanks for listening. :)

now with LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad its a whole different kettle of fish than your usual drum&bass that you'd hear out.

what MC Conrad does isnt what you'd think an MC usually does.. the usual D&B mc's freestyle and rhyme like ragga style over the top and things like that and not a lot of ppl like it. its only good for the moment if you were at the event and it gets ya hyped up.

however with MC Conrad its totally different. he actually sings over the top sometimes, he throws in vocal stabs subtley, sometimes he does poetic spoken word during breakdowns. overall he compliments the music well and unlike other MC's, knows WHEN to shuttup. its quite amazing. when you see LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad dj/perform at an event, MC Conrad has a whole effects unit on stage for himself..

and to answer everyone's questions, you'd find that intelligent drum&bass is called so because a lot of it has jazzy elements. its smoother, much more melodic than the usual harder styles.

but with regards to any intelligent d&b recommendations, just get some live set from this year or last year by LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad.. off the net or buy it.. if you buy a studio released cd, then you'd find that it comes with two cds, A-side is the mix with Conrad and B-side is mix without Conrad.

i saw them the last two times they came downunder and every time was magical. its a whole different kind of energy compared to hard d&b, and trance.. if you can catch them live its worth it. i mean LTJ Bukem is regarded as one of the greatest figures in d&b for a reason..
